Carmelo Anthony Comments on Triangle Offense, Knicks' Coaching Search, More

Adam WellsApr 28, 2016

New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony is at a career crossroads with a rebuilding franchise, but the 31-year-old hopes to have input on the team’s future direction.

During an appearance Thursday on The Dan Patrick Show (via ESPN.com’s Ian Begley), Anthony said he "wanted to have input in the [Knicks'] coaching search."

Begley added he "would've assumed" Knicks president Phil Jackson would have already been in contact with Anthony if the former All-Star was going to have any significant input on the next head coach.

Anthony told Patrick (via Begley) he hasn't had any conversation with Jackson about which direction the Knicks are going with their head coach. He also said his "goal" was to retire with the Knicks.

Two years ago, Anthony signed a five-year, $124 million deal to remain with the organization. He's still owed nearly $78 million, with an early-termination option of $27.9 million for the fifth year, per Spotrac.

Another topic of conversation is the system New York will use. Jackson perfected the triangle offense during his coaching days and hired Derek Fisher to utilize the same system in New York. It didn't yield any results before Fisher was fired in February.

Anthony responded to Patrick's question (via Begley) about the triangle by saying he doesn't think it's "overrated," and he would be able to teach "the basics of it in an hour."

The marriage between Anthony and the Knicks hasn't produced the on-court results anyone hoped for. He's never had a good supporting cast to work with, and his individual performance has declined over the last two years.

Anthony's 21.8 points per game in 2015-16 marked his lowest scoring average since his second year in the NBA. He's still a valuable piece who can provide a spark on a good team, but his declining skills and high salary make it hard to justify him being a superstar anymore.

The Knicks have a huge decision to make with their next head coach. That individual's main task will be to help develop Kristaps Porzingis. Anthony will likely be a part of New York's future because of his salary, but his exclusion from the head coaching search speaks volumes.
