Gennady Golovkin vs. Kell Brook Fight Talked Up by Promoter Tom Loeffler
Gennady Golovkin is open to a fight with Kell Brook, if the Englishman is prepared to make the step up to 160 pounds, according to the WBA, IBF and IBO middleweight champion's promoter, Tom Loeffler.
Brook's promoter, Eddie Hearn, recently suggested the IBF welterweight champion could move up from 147 pounds to a catchweight as high as 157 pounds to take on Golovkin, although he said the focus was to "dominate the welterweight division," per Tim Hobbs of Sky Sports.
Loeffler, though, has thrown down the gauntlet, and he said Brook should try to test himself by stepping up to middleweight, per Sky Sports' James Dielhenn:
"If Kell is really serious, it would be something to discuss. Brook is one of the best fighters in the sport. He's at 147lbs and Gennady is at 160 so the only question we have is about the weight, nothing else.
A lot of great welterweights have fought at middleweight - a classic example is Sugar Ray Leonard, who moved up to 160lbs to beat Marvin Hagler.
Any comments we have made about Brook have not been disparaging, we have a lot of respect for him.
His win over Shawn Porter was fantastic - I rated Porter as one of the best welterweights in the division so for Brook to come to America and beat him speaks volumes.
"
Loeffler added it would be a "big statement" for Brook, 29, to step up to take on GGG.
The 34-year-old Kazakh is the mandatory challenger for the WBC middleweight belt held currently by Canelo Alvarez, and he has already told the Mexican—who will defend his title against Amir Khan on May 7—he will not fight at a catchweight, per Hobbs.
It is unlikely then that Golovkin would be prepared to step down at all to take on Brook, and Loeffler has effectively confirmed as much.
Both men are unbeaten in their professional careers. Golovkin stretched his record to 35-0, as he knocked out the United States' Dominic Wade on Saturday, per HBOboxing:
Meanwhile, Brook went to 36-0 with his March defeat of mandatory challenger Kevin Bizier, and a clash between him and Triple G would be a fascinating prospect.
The Guardian's Kevin Mitchell, though, believes "there is nobody to touch Golovkin at or either side of 11st 7lb."
Despite Loeffler's latest comments, Brook is surely more likely to focus on major welterweight clashes than to take a huge step up to take on Golovkin.
