Brandon Carr, Cowboys Agree on New Contract: Latest Details, Comments

Matt FitzgeraldApr 25, 2016

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr agreed to take a pay cut on Monday entering the final year of his contract.

The team announced Carr "agreed to take a significant pay cut, dropping his base from $9.1 to under $6 million for this final year of the original five-year deal he signed in 2012." Carr's cap hit will also drop to $10 million this season, down from $13.8 million.

NFL Network's Albert Breer initially reported Carr and the Cowboys came to terms on a new deal.

Carr original cap hit would've made him Dallas' second-most expensive player behind only star quarterback Tony Romo.

The veteran corner has not missed a start in his entire NFL career. After playing for the Kansas City Chiefs beginning in 2008, Carr came to the Cowboys on a five-year, $50.1 million deal and has mostly lived up to that sizable number.

America's Team needs leaders like Carr to bounce back from a down 2015 campaign in which Romo was injured throughout, leading to a 4-12 record.

Carr was still in action every week and logged 76 combined tackles. Although he did fail to record an interception for the second straight season, he is a valuable leader in the locker room, which underwent considerable turmoil last year, according to Bleacher Report's Jason Cole.

In addition to what he brings on the field and in the locker room, Carr is also visible in the community and was named the team's nominee for the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year this past season.

The Cowboys are now slated to enter the 2016 draft, starting Thursday, with approximately $11.3 million in cap room, ranking 18th in the league in that category.

It was a nice gesture by Carr to make a bit more room for Dallas' future. His overall gridiron performance in the midst of a contract year stands to benefit from the return of cornerback Orlando Scandrick, who missed all of 2015 with a torn ACL and MCL.
