Russell Westbrook's Dancing Sparks Reaction from Charlie Villanueva
Dallas Mavericks forward Charlie Villanueva wasn't amused with the pregame dance routine between Oklahoma City Thunder point guards Russell Westbrook and Cameron Payne before Game 2 of the teams' first-round playoff series.
Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com passed along comments the 31-year-old veteran made Tuesday about the situation in a Fox Sports PROcast video.
"If you want to go dancing and stuff like that, go to a nightclub," Villanueva said. "Go to a club and dance. Go to 'Dancing With the Stars' and be a dancer. You want to battle and dance, we can battle, but not in a basketball game. Plus, they were in my way, too, so I wasn't necessarily interrupting their dance."
ESPN's Royce Young captured the minor confrontation in question Monday night:
After the game, an 85-84 Mavericks victory to level the series at one game apiece, Westbrook responded to Villanueva interrupting the routine, per Brett Smiley of Fox Sports.
"That's for the guys who don't play," Westbrook said. "Gotta do something."
Villanueva caught word of those comments and stated, "[Payne] and myself, we both had the same stat line," per MacMahon. Neither player entered the action in Game 2.
If nothing else, the verbal warfare following the brief physical exchange adds a little more intrigue to the moments before Game 3 gets underway. If Villanueva was willing to interfere with the dance on the road, it's hard to imagine he'll shy away while "defending" his home court.
The series resumes Thursday night at the American Airlines Center. And you can bet there will be a lot more cameras pointed toward Westbrook and Villanueva with the Mavs seemingly trying to do anything possible to get the Thunder off their game, and it's hard to blame them.
