Natalya vs. Charlotte Announced for WWE Payback 2016 PPV
Fresh off of winning the WWE Women's Championship at WrestleMania 32 on April 3, Charlotte has her next task. She will be putting the title on the line against Natalya at WWE Payback on May 1.
The match was announced Monday on Raw in London, per Greg Beck of Wrestling News.
A caveat has been added to the match. Charlotte's father, two-time WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair, will be in her corner as usual. Natalya, however, will have her uncle, WWE Hall of Famer Bret "The Hitman" Hart, in her corner.
Ever since the day after WrestleMania 32, in which Charlotte defeated Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks in a Triple Threat match for the new women's title, Natalya has been at the forefront as Charlotte's new challenger for the belt.
This feud has also involved two legendary families, with Charlotte claiming she's "genetically superior" to Natalya and her family. After a heated exchange between Natalya and Charlotte on the April 4 edition of Raw, Natalya was given a women's title match the following week on Raw.
Natalya had Charlotte in the Sharpshooter, and Charlotte was tapping. Seeming to be on the verge of a new women's champion, Flair pulled the referee out of the ring and called for the bell on a count of disqualification. Natalya won the match but did not win the championship.
It seemed like this would be an odd pairing at the start, but Charlotte and Natalya have shown ring chemistry together. Their title match last Monday was another solid match in the women's division and was a great way to respond after the instant-classic Triple Threat match at AT&T Stadium on April 3.
While Natalya has had the upper hand the last two weeks, she doesn't seem likely to take the belt off of Charlotte before SummerSlam. The time will come—possibly in another match with Lynch or Banks—but expect Charlotte to retain the belt in what should be a solid technical wrestling match.
More importantly, it'll be great for WWE fans in Chicago to see the return of The Hitman—not just in a WWE arena, but in general. Hart announced on Feb. 1 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and he had surgery on Feb. 10. This will be his first major appearance since then, so it should be great to see the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be back in WWE.
