Analyzing the State of WWE's Tag Team Division

The Doctor Chris MuellerApr 17, 2016

WWE's tag team division has always been a point of contention for fans. Every few years, it looks like management wants to bolster the ranks with a few talented teams, but eventually the priority shifts back to the singles titles, which leaves the tag team division looking weak.

The current crop of talent is one of the best rosters in WWE history in terms of wrestling ability, and we could be looking at the start of a tag team revolution in WWE.

The women's division underwent a big overhaul, and it has only continued to gain momentum as top stars like Charlotte and Sasha Banks consistently produce matches that fans want to see.

One of the reasons the tag division seems ripe for a collective push is the sheer number of groups. Here is a quick rundown of all the teams on the main roster:

  • The Ascension (Konnor suspended)
  • The League of Nations
  • The Social Outcasts (Adam Rose suspended)
  • The Wyatt Family (injuries)
  • The Usos
  • The Dudley Boyz
  • The Colons (soon to return)
  • Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady
  • The Vaudevillains
  • The Lucha Dragons
  • Golden Truth (eventually?)
  • The New Day
  • Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows

Trios and teams of four still count because they often end up chasing the WWE Tag Team Championships. When was the last time 13 groups existed at the same time in WWE?

That much competition should allow for a long period of fresh feuds, both non-title and for the gold. Running multiple storylines between different groups like WWE is currently doing is the best way to give more Superstars the screen time they need.

Bringing Enzo and Cass and The Vaudevillains up from NXT has added a little more depth to the roster, but they need to prove themselves so they don't end up like The Ascension.

The most significant addition in recent months was Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows. Their debut on Raw made an impact, and the announce team acknowledging their success in Japan is a good sign they will get a significant push.

We now have four storylines in the tag team division at the same time. Enzo and Big Cass are feuding with The Dudley Boyz, The Usos will look to get revenge on Anderson and Gallows, and a tournament is taking place to determine the No. 1 contenders for The New Day's tag titles.

Then there's the "will they, won't they" saga between Goldust and R-Truth. At this rate, we have to wonder if WWE is even planning on having them get together, or will this lead to a singles feud?

WWE might not be making a big deal out of a tag team revolution like it did for the women, but the company is clearly putting more effort into tag team wrestling in general.

Even if management breaks up three or four groups in the coming months, there would still be enough left to keep the division going strong.

The best thing about the group of Superstars in the tag title scene is the amount of diversity. Every group brings something different to the table, and many of the teams are entertaining.

The New Day has been one of the best parts of WWE programming for a long time, The Usos are exciting to watch, Enzo and Big Cass have a unique connection with the crowd, and The Dudley Boyz bring veteran experience with them.

The Vaudevillains provide a totally original gimmick, The Lucha Dragons are keeping lucha libre alive, and the team of Gallows and Anderson will be a breath of fresh air.

In conclusion, WWE has all the talent needed to make the tag team division as great as it was during the Attitude Era, and the continued efforts by management to feature multiple storylines has provided some great feuds.

A tag team revolution could be happening right before our eyes. We just have to see if officials will keep adding fuel to the fire or if the tag title scene will lose steam like it has so many times in the past.

What do you think? Is WWE's tag team division undergoing a renaissance? Who is your favorite team on the roster?
