Adrien Broner Indicted on Robbery, Assault Charges: Latest Details, Reaction
Adrien Broner, fresh off a victory over Ashley Theophane on April 1, was indicted Thursday on robbery and assault charges stemming from a lawsuit filed following a January incident with another man.
Per the Associated Press' Joe Kay (via Yahoo Sports), Broner's indictment represents the "next step in [the] prosecutors' case against the former WBA super lightweight champion."
Per the AP report, Broner's indictment on aggravated robbery is a first-degree felony charge and "carries a maximum sentence of three to 10 years." He was also indicted on second-degree charges of felony assault and robbery with sentences ranging from two to eight years.
The alleged incident took place at a bowling alley in Cincinnati earlier this year, with Mitchell Abramson of RingTV reporting specific details of what a source said happened:
TMZ Sports obtained official documents in the case that say Broner "retrieved a handgun from his vehicle, approached the victim, demanded money, then struck [the victim] in the face with a closed fist a second time, this time causing the victim to be rendered unconscious."
Broner downplayed the alleged incident in a text conversation with ESPN.com's Dan Rafael, posting the exchange on his official Instagram (warning: contains sensitive language).
The 26-year-old Broner has had legal problems lately, with TMZ Sports reporting Tuesday he was serving 10 days in a Cincinnati jail for violating his probation in a reckless driving case that is unrelated to Thursday's indictment.
After defeating Theophane, Broner's professional boxing record moved to 32-2 with one no-contest. He lost the WBA super light welterweight title before the bout after failing to make weight, but he still won the match with a ninth-round technical knockout.
