Lewis Hamilton Handed Chinese Grand Prix 2016 Grid Penalty for Gearbox Change
Lewis Hamilton’s chances of success at Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix have been hit with a significant setback, after it was confirmed he will face a five-place grid penalty.
As reported by Andrew Benson of BBC Sport, the sanction comes after Mercedes decided to change Hamilton's gearbox ahead of the race. It's noted the equipment was damaged during the driver's last outing in Bahrain, and a five-place penalty is the standard punishment.
Per Benson, Mercedes have stated they’ve made the decision because this venue represents “the best place to make the change and take the penalty." The Shanghai International Circuit is known for giving drivers a lot of overtaking chances, including the longest straight the drivers will face this season.
The reigning world champion posted the following on his Instagram feed confirming the penalty, insisting he was expecting a tough test in Shanghai as a result:
It’s news that will come as a boost to Hamilton’s team-mate Nico Rosberg, who is seeking to wrestle the world title off the Brit this season.

The German has begun the 2016 campaign in exceptional form too, with two wins from the opening pair of races. Rosberg has already built up a 17-point buffer to Hamilton, and with his team-mate set to be shunted back down the grid this weekend, he has an excellent opportunity to extend that advantage in China.
Qualifying has been the most positive part of Hamilton’s season so far, starting both races in pole position. It’s his race craft that has ultimately let him down and something that will need to improve significantly if he’s to take the chequered flag this weekend.
