5 Reasons Why It's Time to Bring Back the WWE Cruiserweight Championship
Many arguments have been made over the years as to why the WWE Cruiserweight Championship should return, but there would be no better time to reintroduce the title than right now.
WWE is producing a special series on the WWE Network just for cruiserweight wrestlers featuring talents from a few smaller promotions.
This is a sign that WWE is recognizing the worth of smaller wrestlers, and having a real championship for them to fight over would add a lot to the product.
The number of incredible talents on the roster who would qualify for the division hasn't been as big as it is now in years. This slideshow will look at five reasons why these guys deserve a title of their own.
The Number of Cruiserweight Wrestlers
1 of 5WWE used to be the home of giants. Guys like Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior reigned supreme, but times have changed.
When the title was retired in 2007, the number of Superstars who qualified as cruiserweights was much lower than it is now. The roster is overflowing with wrestlers who could fill the division, which means there are more than enough people to justify bringing the title back.
Kalisto, Sin Cara, Neville, Sami Zayn, Tyler Breeze, AJ Styles, Xavier Woods, Epico and Primo are the most obvious names who would make up the division, but depending on where WWE lists the maximum weight, Superstars such as Stardust and Dolph Ziggler may also qualify.
That's on top of all the people currently waiting in NXT to be called up to the main roster who would be eligible to compete for the title.
Also, just because someone is classified as a cruiserweight, it doesn't mean he is out of the running for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
Title Reigns Last Longer These Days
2 of 5There was a time when it felt like people were playing hot potato with titles, but that is no longer the case. Championship reigns last a lot longer than they used to, which means we don't get that excitement when someone wins a title as often.
Here is a quick rundown of the number of title changes over roughly the past year:
- The Intercontinental Championship has changed hands seven times since March 29, 2015.
- The United States Championship has changed hands six times since March 29, 2015.
- The Tag Team Championships have changed hands three times since April 26, 2015
- The Divas/Women's Championship only changed hands once in the past year.
- The WWE World Heavyweight Championship has changed hands six times since March 29, 2015.
We have seen some title reigns last as long as 10 months in recent years. CM Punk held the WWE Championship for 434 days at one point.
It's great when a champion establishes himself as a dominant competitor, but there is nothing like the feeling of seeing someone win a belt after an entertaining match.
Adding the Cruiserweight Championship to the mix would allow WWE to book a few more title changes every year while also giving another deserving Superstar a push.
Global Cruiserweight Series
3 of 5WWE is producing a special Global Cruiserweight Series for the WWE Network, and according to WWE.com, it will feature talents from all around the world from promotions like Evolve, the U.K.-based Progress and Resistance Pro Wrestling.
It's not only a big deal for WWE to form relationships with these companies and feature their Superstars, but it's even more exciting to see the company promote cruiserweights with a special tournament.
Qualifying matches will take place at events run by these promotions, while the 32-man tournament will air over the course of 10 weeks on the WWE Network beginning July 13.
It would make things even better if WWE presented the winner with a brand-new Cruiserweight Championship, but if the Superstar who wins isn't part of WWE, it would still be beneficial to bring the belt back so that the wrestlers who qualify on the WWE roster have another championship to chase.
Cruiserweight Matches Are a Lot of Fun
4 of 5Anyone who watched WCW during the Monday Night Wars knows how much fun matches featuring cruiserweight wrestlers can be.
When NWO was at its peak, guys like Eddie Guerrero, Juventud Guerrera, Chris Jericho and Dean Malenko were producing the most exciting performances every week.
With the level of talent currently on the roster, WWE could recreate some of that magic with a new version of the title held by so many great wrestlers.
Forget about the time Hornswoggle held the belt for a moment and try to remember when guys like Matt Hardy and Rey Mysterio were champions. It can be like that again.
It Could Be a Second Singles Title for NXT
5 of 5NXT has three championships, and only one of them is a singles title for the men. If WWE doesn't want to put the cruiserweight belt on the main roster, it could always be a second singles championship in NXT.
In the four years since the title's inception, there have only been seven NXT champions. While longer reigns certainly help establish a Superstar's credibility, it also means a lot of people who deserved a reign never got the chance to feel that belt around their waist.
Adding a second singles title to NXT would give a lot more people the opportunity to work as a champion before being called up to the main roster.
Had the cruiserweight title been around last year, Tyler Breeze might have had a chance to win it before heading to Raw and SmackDown, where he has been misused since the day he debuted.
What do you think? Is now the right time to bring back the WWE Cruiserweight Championship?
