Dave Joerger Reportedly Agrees to Become Head Coach of Sacramento Kings
The Sacramento Kings have reportedly agreed "in principle" with former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Dave Joerger to become the team's next head coach, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.
Joerger's hiring comes after the franchise announced April 14 it had fired head coach George Karl. Wojnarowski reported Joerger will sign a three-year deal with a team option for a fourth season that will pay him $4 million annually.
On Sunday, Wojnarowski reported a Monday meeting with owner Vivek Ranadive was the "final hurdle."
After the Grizzlies fired Joerger on Saturday, Wojnarowski reported the Kings were interested in interviewing him for their vacancy, noting he has now moved to the top of their list. Wojnarowski added there is "significant momentum on Joerger-to-the-Kings" and reported there is a real chance a deal could get done.
It wouldn't be a stretch to say the Kings might have had the most unattractive job opening in the league this offseason, even more so than the recently filled Brooklyn Nets position.
For one, the team has gone through eight different head coaches, only one of whom lasted more than two full seasons, since letting Rick Adelman go at the end of the 2005-06 season.
Sacramento's ownership situation is a complete mess, general manager Vlade Divac looks out of his element but signed an extension in March, and star player DeMarcus Cousins continues to cause as many headaches as he produces double-doubles.
The first thing Joerger will need to do is strengthen Sacramento on the defensive end. According to NBA.com, the Kings ranked 23rd in defensive rating (106.3) and opponent field-goal percentage (46.2) this season.
Hiring Joerger will only get them so far, though. Until they become a more stable organization behind the scenes, their off-court drama will continue to bleed into their performance on the court.
