Chad Clay, Julian Rochester Arrested: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction
Georgia Bulldogs freshman football players Chad Clay and Julian Rochester were both arrested early Tuesday morning and charged with two felonies apiece.
According to Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald, each player was charged with having a weapon in a school zone and second-degree criminal damage. They were being held at Clarke County Jail in Georgia without bond on the weapons charge and on $5,000 bond on the criminal damage charge.
Weiszer added more detail on what the police found in the players' apartment:
"Police were called after a repair person went into the dorm to look into a leaking toilet from a room upstairs and saw the BB gun, [Attorney Kim] Stephens said. ...
Suspected marijuana cigarettes were found in a “cigar package” in the dresser drawer of a bedroom identified as belonging to Clay, according to the police incident report. A bong with suspected marijuana remnants, a red grinder and a baggie of suspected marijuana residue (which did not contain a sufficient amount of marijuana for testing) was found in a bathroom cabinet under a sink adjacent to Clay’s bedroom.
"
Per Seth Emerson and Chip Towers of DawgNation, the players are accused of possessing and firing a BB gun. Following the arrests, Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart released the following statement: "I'm disappointed with the poor judgment of Julian and Chad. We expect full compliance with the policies of the university and of our football program from all our student-athletes. Information is still being gathered, but they will be disciplined in an appropriate manner."
According to 247Sports, Clay is a 3-star cornerback from Suwanee, Georgia, while Rochester is a 4-star defensive tackle hailing from Powder Springs, Georgia.
Both players are early enrollees who were scheduled to take part in Saturday's G-Day spring game, although their status for that contest is currently unclear.
Neither Clay nor Rochester was expected to make a significant impact in 2016, but their chances of doing so may have been lessened even further, particularly if they are forced to miss practice and preparation time ahead of the season.
