Chris Heighington Pulls Son from Under Buggy After Sharks vs Gold Coast NRL Win
Cronulla Sharks' Chris Heighington rescued his son, Rocco, from under a buggy after the three-year-old had become trapped following a 25-20 win for the forward's side over Gold Coast on Sunday.
The child had gone on to the pitch to celebrate with his dad and the team following the victory and was involved in a frightening incident which saw Heighington, Andrew Fifita and Ben Barba rush to drag the vehicle off him—see the below video:
Per Fox Sports' Simon Brunsdon, "it is believed the unmanned vehicle rolled over the child and he became stuck," and Rocco reportedly escaped without injury.
According to Cronulla chief executive Lyall Gorman, the buggy was being used at the time to collect signage and had begun to roll when "its attendant had inadvertently tossed a corner post onto its accelerator pedal," per the Sydney Morning Herald's Chris Barrett.
Cronulla's official Twitter feed confirmed that the youngster had been examined by the club's doctors following the incident at the Southern Cross Group Stadium:
Sharks coach Shane Flanagan gave an update on the situation after the NRL game and said the club will look into the incident, per Brunsdon:
"The doctor said that he’s OK.
I think they’re still checking him out because he’s only a little kid and he can’t tell me too much what’s wrong with him.
Yeah, it’s terribly concerning but hopefully he’s OK. He’s in the sheds with the doctor and the paramedics so touch wood he’s OK.
(The club) will find out how it happened. I’ll leave that to Lyall and his men. We’ll make sure that we find out why and how.
"
Following the victory, Cronulla now sit fourth in the NRL ladder having won four from six so far this season, while Gold Coast are down in ninth.
