IPL Results 2016: Indians vs. Supergiants Score, Updated Table and Schedule

Gianni VerschuerenApr 9, 2016

Defending champions Mumbai Indians suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Rising Pune Supergiants during Saturday's Indian Premier League opening match at Wankhede Stadium, losing by nine wickets (with 32 balls remaining)

Ajinkya Rahane powered the chase for the new Twenty20 IPL franchise, who restricted Mumbai to just 121 runs and always looked like chasing down the small target. Rahane put up the first half-century of the new IPL season, finishing with an unbeaten 66 from 42.

Here's a look at the standings after the first day:

Mumbai Indians vs. Rising Pune Supergiants

Supergiants: 126/1 (Rahane 66, Marsh 2-21) beat Indians: 121/8 (H Singh 45, H Singh 1-24) by 9 wickets (with 32 balls remaining).

Mumbai won the toss and elected to bat first, which came as a surprise, as the chasing teams at the Wankhede Stadium won three out of four matches during the recent World Twenty20 Championship, per Karthik Krishnaswamy of ESPNCricinfo.

Pune's bowlers took control early, dismissing openers Lendl Simmons (eight from eight) and Rohit Sharma (seven from five) inside the first four overs. Ishant Sharma took both wickets, but the fans and pundits were more interested in his odd hairstyle.

Ayaz Memon couldn't quite figure it out:

Supergiants' bowling clinic continued early, as Hardik Pandya managed just nine from 11 balls and Jos Buttler, who looked fantastic during the World T20, was caught for a duck.

Ambati Rayudu (22 from 27) was the first batsman to put up some runs, but Mumbai's run rate remained low until Harbhajan Singh got his chance with the bat. He finished with an unbeaten 45 from 30, playing a big role in Mumbai's push during the final overs.

The Indians' Twitter account shared some of his statistics:

With the exception of RP Singh, who gave up 30 runs in his three overs, all of Pune's bowlers finished with economy rates below 9.00 in what was a fantastic showing. Mitchell Marsh led the way with 2 for 21 in his four overs, while Sharma took 2 for 36.

Rajat Bhatia finished with a single wicket, but his economy rate of 2.50 through four overs was superb.

The target of 122 didn't look particularly daunting for the Supergiants, who sent Rahane and Faf du Plessis (34 from 33) out to bat first. The two got the chase off on the right foot, lasting nine overs for 76 runs.

Cricbuzz thought Mumbai missed star bowler Lasith Malinga:

Harbhajan finally bowled Du Plessis in the 10th over, but it was too little, too late, as Rahane completed his half-century shortly after. Kevin Pietersen also chipped in 21 from 14, and the Supergiants chased down the target inside 15 overs.

Harbhajan was the only Mumbai bowler to grab a wicket, while Shreyas Gopal finished with the lowest economy rate (6.00), giving up 18 runs in his three overs.

Per ESPNCricinfo, Sharma said he and his Mumbai team-mates won't panic just yet:

"

The pitch looked okay, we didn't bat well. One twenty six wasn't enough. Lot to learn from this game, hopefully we go back and think about it. We didn't think the ball was going to do that much. I thought they swung the ball early on and out shot selection wasn't that great it cost us the game. We go to Calcutta from here, we've had some good memories there, we won two titles there. Just the start of the tournament, not to panic.

"

With Malinga sidelined due to injury, Mumbai's bowlers will need to step up until the Sri Lankan comes back, and on Saturday, they simply couldn't pull through. The bowlers shouldn't be blamed for the loss, however―you can't expect to win with a total of 121.

Indians will have to improve drastically if they wish to repeat as champions, while Pune couldn't have asked for a better start in their IPL debut. Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils will start their IPL campaigns when they meet on Sunday.
