Swansea vs. Chelsea: Guus Hiddink Talks Antonio Conte, More in Pre-Match Presser

Gianni VerschuerenApr 8, 2016

Chelsea interim manager Guus Hiddink believes future Blues boss Antonio Conte has the tools and pedigree to be a success in the Premier League, but he refused to reveal whether he will give advice to the Italian regarding the futures of John Terry and technical director Michael Emenalo.

The Dutchman faced the press ahead of Saturday's match against Swansea City and was bombarded with questions about Conte and the future of the club. As shared by the Press Association's Matt McGeehan, he believes the former Juventus boss has what it takes to be successful:

Per Liam Twomey of ESPN FC, he couldn't help himself:

Chelsea officially announced Conte as the club's next head coach on Monday, but the former midfielder will still take charge of the Italian national team during UEFA Euro 2016. He'll start his Blues career after that tournament, and until that time, Hiddink will stay in charge of Chelsea.

Per Twomey, he confirmed Conte visited the club on Tuesday and asked if he could meet the players as well, something Hiddink had no objections to. Of course, the reporters immediately wanted to know whether Hiddink gave him any advice or will do so in the future, but the Dutchman dodged the question:

When he was asked about the futures of veteran centre-back Terry and Emenalo, who has been heavily involved in Chelsea's transfer dealings the last few years, he again avoided the subject:

Turning his attention to Saturday's match, Hiddink confirmed Terry, Eden Hazard, Nemanja Matic and Loic Remy will all be out due to injury, while Diego Costa is still sidelined due to a ban, per Twomey.

He was barely allowed to look ahead to the match before the topic changed to Conte and the future once more. Asked if Conte might find it difficult to attract star talent due to the likely absence of UEFA Champions League football, he pointed at his impressive resume and a clear plan for the future as major attractions:

The Dutchman also provided an update on his own future, confirming his career as an everyday manager at the club level is over:

Finally, per the Blues' official Twitter account, he said he will be there for Chelsea if needed and expressed his love for the club:

Chelsea's rise up the Premier League standings since Hiddink replaced Jose Mourinho has been impressive, and if the Blues somehow manage to sneak into the UEFA Europa League spots, the 2015-16 campaign may just rank among Hiddink's finest achievements.

The Blues are unbeaten in their last 15 Premier League matches, per Squawka Football, and they're expected to continue that run when they meet Swansea. A trip to Wales is never easy, but with just seven points separating the Blues and fifth-placed Manchester United, a win at the Liberty Stadium could be huge with an eye on the final Premier League push.
