Martin Reportedly Not a Candidate at Georgia Tech
Wednesday, April 6
ESPN's Jeff Goodman reported Martin isn't in the race to land the Georgia Tech coaching job.
Sources told Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle earlier in the day Wednesday that the school had made Martin a "prime target" for its coaching vacancy.
Martin could be looking for a way out of Cal, as he is under campus review to see if he "fulfilled his responsibility as a mandatory reporter of sexual harassment allegations against assistant coach Yann Hufnagel," per Letourneau.
A source close to Martin told Letourneau that he has been interested in looking for another coaching gig "for some time."
Regardless of the outcome of the school's review, those in the Cal community want to see him back. Boosters have created an online petition asking chancellor Nicholas Dirks and athletic director Mike Williams to continue supporting Martin, per Letourneau.
Georgia Tech fired former head coach Brian Gregory after five seasons on March 25 after he failed to get the Yellow Jackets to the NCAA tournament once even though he won 21 games last year. That's the most Georgia Tech has won in a single season since the 2009-10 campaign.
A coach like Martin, who has made the tournament two of the past three years—with Tennessee in 2013-14 before 2015-16 with Cal—could be an attractive option to Georgia Tech.
CBS Sports' Gary Parrish also pointed out another factor that could tempt Martin to Georgia Tech:
If Martin falls into hot water at Cal, the Yellow Jackets could provide a way out for him along with a new challenge, as he would be coaching in an ACC that the likes of North Carolina, Duke, Virginia, Louisville and Notre Dame have dominated.
