Arsene Wenger Talks Arsenal's Title Chances, Alex Iwobi After Win vs. Watford

James DudkoApr 2, 2016

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the Premier League title isn't "there for the taking," but insisted his players will continue fighting for the prize after thrashing Watford 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The convincing win has moved Wenger's squad to within three points of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur and eight behind leaders Leicester City, who have both played a game less.

Among the goals was precocious attacking midfielder Alex Iwobi, whose rapid development is a tribute to Arsenal's values, specifically the faith in youth and willingness to give it a chance, according to Wenger.

The Frenchman made it clear he and his players haven't given up the fight to win a first league crown since 2004, per the team's official site:

Wenger also described how producing performances to this standard represents his team's best chance of making the unlikely possible:

A player increasingly crucial to those performances is 19-year-old attacking Alex Iwobi. The Nigerian netted Arsenal's second after fine combination play with fellow attacker Alexis Sanchez.

Wenger commended Iwobi's steady development at the club, while identifying some of the key assets that are accelerating his development:

The Gunners chief also took a moment to remind his critics about the club's laudable dedication to giving young players a chance, according to ESPN's Miguel Delaney:

Wenger's approach to youth is commendable. Yet it hasn't always been matched by winning major trophies, a constant source of frustration for many of the club's supporters.

Still, Arsenal's continued willingness to giving players like Iwobi and 20-year-old full-back Hector Bellerin chances to shine is a key part of the club's identity.

What Wenger has to prove he can master again is getting the blend between precocious youths and battle-hardened, established pros right. If he does, the Frenchman will finally shape a squad capable of winning a fourth Premier League title.

Though Wenger remains bullish about that prospect, it looks like a bridge too far for the current team to cross during this season's final seven games.
