Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
McCown has been with the Saints since 2013, though he's thrown only 40 passes over the past three seasons because Drew Brees is entrenched as the starting quarterback. McCown did make one start in 2015, against Carolina in Week 3, after Brees had suffered a shoulder injury.
Even though injuries and limited playing time have defined McCown's NFL career, he told Jimmy Watson of the Shreveport Times that being a backup is not a bad gig: “In that role with the Saints, I like working with the younger guys and helping Drew be the best he can be."
Brees' work behind the scenes keeps McCown and the other Saints quarterbacks ready to go with random games, as Kevin Clark of the Wall Street Journal (h/t Christopher Dabe of NOLA.com) noted in September.
Dabe summarized the games:
"Many involve hitting a stationary or moving target at varying distances with a football. One that stood out was the dropkick competition. The drop-kick is different than a punt in that a properly executed drop-kick requires the ball to bounce before it is struck.
Brees learned the skill from former San Diego Chargers teammate Doug Flutie when both played there in the early 2000s.
"
The rapport between quarterbacks can be a huge asset for a team. Both players are instrumental in developing the offensive game plan and finding holes to attack the opposing defense.
In a perfect world, McCown won't see the field much because Brees will be under center for all 16 games. His relationship with the Saints coaching staff, as well as Brees, brings a level of comfort that can't be understated for a quarterback.
