Salvon Ahmed to Washington: Huskies Land 4-Star Athlete Prospect
Washington added a potential difference-maker on Friday when athlete Salvon Ahmed committed to its 2017 recruiting class.
Brandon Huffman of Scout.com provided an image from the scene where Ahmed made his pledge to the Huskies:
The 6'0" and 186-pound Ahmed is a 4-star prospect, per 247Sports’ composite rankings, and the No. 98 overall player, the No. 2 athlete and the No. 2 prospect from the state of Washington in the 2017 class.
Being from Washington, Ahmed generated plenty of buzz in the Pac-12 during the recruiting cycle. In-state schools Washington and Washington State pursued him, as well as fellow conference rivals Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, USC, Arizona and Utah.
The Huskies were always in the mix early and owned 100 percent of 247Sports' "Crystal Ball" predictions as of Feb. 25.
The school's proximity likely played a role, but Ahmed told Scott Eklund of Scout's Dawgman.com that the Huskies saw him playing on both sides of the ball:
"They said they can see me almost anywhere -- receiver, running back, defensive back -- so they just said they want to get me into the program and then they'd figure out different ways to use me. Honestly, I really don't care where I play, I just want to play, so I like it that they can see me in different roles.
"
The Huskies' ability to let Ahmed play wherever he wanted certainly didn't hurt their chances. Eklund said Ahmed finished with more than 2,000 yards of total offense and scored “close to 30 touchdowns” while racking up 45 tackles and four picks on defense.
Huskies head coach Chris Petersen is capitalizing on what's been a fantastic start to this season. His team is currently 3-0 and ranked ninth in both major polls.
Washington didn't have a stellar 2016 recruiting class, finishing 29th in 247Sports' official rankings, but just as he did at Boise State, Petersen is a master at identifying talent that knows how to execute his system on both sides of the ball.
A premier athlete like Ahmed gives Petersen another foundation building block that he can use on the 2017 recruiting trail, in addition to the Huskies' on-field success this year.
His explosive speed (4.5 40-yard dash, per 247Sports) and agility allow him to make defenders miss in open space as a running back and keep up with receivers as a defensive back.
Between his athleticism and ability to play so many positions, Ahmed is talented enough to compete for playing time right away. His new school may ultimately have him focus on one position to further hone his skills, and he could develop into one of the headliners of the 2017 class if he improves in kind.
