Pros and Cons of Shane McMahon vs. Undertaker at WWE WrestleMania 32

Tom ClarkFeb 23, 2016

Shane McMahon returned on the February 22 edition of Monday Night Raw, and that was not the most shocking part. The most shocking part came moments later, when Vince McMahon booked his son against The Undertaker in a Hell in a Cell match at WrestleMania 32.

It was unexpected and obviously unpredictable.

Many fans are likely happy with the booking. After all, WWE has fallen in a rut as of late, and this match is not only different, it's exciting. This is the company's chance to do something new and turn WrestleMania upside down in a way that's not been seen in a long time.

Other fans are likely upset about it all, especially considering the match feels like it was pulled out of thin air. It seems to be an illogical booking with no real reason for happening other than a lack of creative effort.

Either way, fans are already debating the point, and that will surely continue until WrestleMania happens on April 3.

The Pros

The biggest plus here is that WrestleMania suddenly just got a lot more interesting.

Many predicted Roman Reigns versus Triple H, so when Roman won at Fastlane, it was not that much of a shock. Reigns' critics have not been happy about the prospect of him once again headlining Mania, especially when it was obvious the company had no other route to take.

But no one saw Shane versus Taker coming.

Now there's a reason to be compelleda reason to watch with great anticipation. Shane's arguably never had a bad match, and WrestleMania is Undertaker's favorite stage. This one should be more than dramatic; it should be fun.

Fun is exactly what fans should have on April 3.

This is not about Taker being embroiled in a crazy-intense feud with Brock Lesnar. It doesn't involve the streak or championships or even title shots. This is not an indictment on Taker's age or how many years he has left in the ring.

Undertaker vs. Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 31

For once, Undertaker can just hit the ring and entertain without all the usual fan speculation that comes along with it. He will call the match, he will sell for Shane, and most importantly, he will make Shane look good.

Undertaker will do business because that's who he is.

Another great part of this is the fact that if Shane wins, he gets control of Raw. This is great news for every fan who tunes in every week only to see The Authority constantly controlling the intro, backstage spots and mic time.

Triple H and Stephanie may be great heels, but it's been entirely too much, too often.

Shane would bring a new, fresh vibe to Raw and make fans happy in the process. No one would be able to predict what happens next, and no one would want to miss the show. Shane's presence would almost certainly mean the end of The Authority, a faction that will celebrate three years in power this August.

It's definitely time for a change.

The Cons

Fans may be happy about this now, but that will not last long.

Shane's return is indeed exciting. It is new, and it is fresh, but it is doomed to be a letdown. Shane is a McMahon, and that means he will change allegiances whenever the mood strikes him. You can't trust his character, as he will ultimately always side with his heel family.

He may destroy The Authority, but he will only rebuild it in his own image.

If he does win at WrestleMania, what does that say about his opponent? Taking a pin from Lesnar is one thing; taking a pin from a guy who's not a wrestler is something else altogether.

Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar

The whole storyline could backfire and leave Undertaker looking much worse than anyone could imagine. The truth is, he likely doesn't have that many years left to competedoes WWE want to spotlight one of his career's final moments ending in a pin to Shane McMahon?

Shane in a WrestleMania main event in 2016 is further proof that the McMahon family must have that spotlight.

Is that what fans really want? WWE has a locker room full of talent on both Raw and SmackDown, with another locker room in NXT; there's not one guy capable of working Undertaker? The Deadman is in a perfect position to build a star. Why not use what's already there?

Instead, the McMahon family has to once again remind everyone that they are the most important stars in the company.

So since those stars are mostly heel, why would a perennial favorite like The Undertaker do their bidding?

Though this storyline has yet to fully unfold, what sort of reason could be given to explain why The Deadman would suddenly just show up and do as he's told by his villainous boss? Is Taker turning heel now, or will it all be explained away with another convoluted reason?

Perhaps the most important down point of this is that the match just doesn't make sense.

It's illogical and created outside of the company's storylines, and it will do nothing but ensure the McMahons remain in control on TV every week. Nothing can come of this except more of the same, and if the company wasn't so consumed with putting itself ahead of the talent, then it would not be happening.

Fans just want it all to mean something, and right now, it just reeks of desperation. But the debate is just getting started.
