Trey Burke to Wizards: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reaction
The Utah Jazz have traded point guard Trey Burke to the Washington Wizards in exchange for a 2021 second-round pick on Sunday, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical and David Aldridge of NBA.com.
Burke, 23, was a solid option coming off the bench for the Jazz during the 2015-16 season, averaging 10.6 points, 2.3 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 21.3 minutes per game.
But the Jazz are loaded at point guard.
Raul Neto was the starter this past season—even though Burke played more minutes per game this year—and Dante Exum, who is coming off a knee injury that cost him the entire season, is the team's future at the position.
And once the Jazz acquired George Hill from the Indiana Pacers, Burke became expendable as the Jazz sought to address other needs. Hill and Exum are likely to see the majority of the minutes for the team at the point.
Burke has been consistent in his three-year career, averaging 12.8 points in both of his first two seasons while chipping in 5.7 assists in his rookie campaign and 4.3 assists last year. Less playing time has seen his numbers take a slight dip, however, though Burke handled himself well in the process, per Jody Genessy of the Deseret News:
Burke is a solid scorer who sets up his teammates and can be effective coming off the bench if called upon to do so. While he hasn't quite lived up to being the No. 9 overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft, he'll be a nice addition for the Wizards. He'll serve as an excellent backup for John Wall and give the team a nice rotation piece at guard with Bradley Beal also in the mix.
He's continued to improve his shooting and has taken strides from beyond the arc (34.4 percent from long range last year), so the Wizards may have gotten a steal by landing Burke. It's another move in a busy offseason for the team, as Washington also reportedly signed Ian Mahinmi and locked up Beal to a long-term extension, per ESPN.com.
