Real Madrid Transfer News: Alvaro Morata Deal Linked to Edinson Cavani Rumours

Matt JonesFeb 16, 2016

Juventus reportedly want to shift Alvaro Morata back to Real Madrid this summer as they seek to secure a deal for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.

As reported by Football Italia, both Gazzetta dello Sport and Tuttosport published pieces suggesting the Bianconeri want the Uruguayan and that the departure of the Spain international is “now treated as a likelihood rather than a hypothesis.”

The piece suggested that Real will exercise a clause to bring the forward back for £30 million and then look to move him on to the Premier League for a profit.

Here is a look at some of the best moments Morata has produced since trading the Spanish capital for Turin:

It’s certainly an intriguing scenario. A Juventus pursuit for Cavani does seem to make sense, with the PSG man struggling to show his best form in the French capital.

Typically during his spell at the Parc des Princes he’s been shifted out to the flanks, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic deployed as a sole striker. Still, Cavani has impressed many times, working hard, winning aerial challenges and getting into the box to score goals. But he’s never quite showcased the kind of form he did in Serie A with Napoli.

As we can see here courtesy of Bleacher Report’s Andrew Gibney, even when given a shot at being the team’s No. 9, Cavani fails to take his chance:

At Napoli the Uruguay international was superb. Alongside Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik they played some mesmerising football, allowing Cavani to regularly get himself on the scoresheet. His presence at the point of this Juventus side, which is packed with creativity, would surely yield similar results.

Morata may have to make way, though. The 23-year-old has not reached the same heights this season as he did in his debut one; in 2014-15, he was a crucial figure for Juve, helping them to a league and cup double, as well as the Champions League final.

Nevertheless, it’d be a shame to see the player moved on to make room for a different player or as part of a money-making scheme for Los Blancos. Indeed, Bleacher Report’s Gianni Verschueren finds it hard to believe that this kind of deal would go ahead, nor would the player himself want it to happen:

With Paulo Dybala very much the main man for the Italian champions, Morata has slipped down the pecking order. At his best, he could potentially be a brilliant foil for the Argentinian, as he has shown on multiple occasions he possesses the rounded playing style to flourish in Serie A. But he needs to show he can do so on a regular basis.

As WhoScored.com noted recently, there have been a few encouraging signs from Morata as of late that he’s getting back to his best:

If he can continue to blossom, Real may well be keen on taking him back and potentially handing him a role in the squad. After all, aside from Karim Benzema, manager Zinedine Zidane has no other natural centre-forwards to call upon.

For Morata, to move back to the Santiago Bernabeu and become the club’s starting striker is surely a long-term ambition. At the moment, he’s still some way short of scaling those heights, but if Juve decide to keep faith with him instead of spending big on a player like Cavani, there’s a lot of potential improvements for this fine young player to make.
