Daniel Bryan Comments on Concussions, WWE Career and More in ESPN Interview

Alec NathanFeb 9, 2016

A day after announcing his retirement from WWE on Monday, Superstar Daniel Bryan sat down with ESPN's Jonathan Coachman to discuss the role head and neck injuries played in his decision to call it quits.

When asked how many concussions he believes he suffered over the course of his illustrious career, Bryan responded with a sobering sum.

"Well, we've been able to document 10 concussions," Bryan said. "And as a lot of people who are familiar with concussions know, you can't document all of them."

Bryan also said an electroencephalogram (EEG) measuring electrical brain currents revealed he had "some slowing" in addition to a "small subacute or chronic lesion" in a region of his brain that produced post-concussion seizures he had been hiding "for a long time."

The complete discussion regarding Bryan's head injuries can be viewed below, courtesy of Coachman's Twitter account:

During a Monday night appearance on Raw in his home state of Washington, Bryan made his departure official as he addressed the fans in attendance:

In addition to the concussions, according to WWE.com, Bryan had surgery in May 2014 to repair a nagging nerve injury in his neck. As a result of complications from his myriad of injuries, Bryan hadn't made an in-ring appearance for WWE since April 2015.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his retirement, the four-time champion maintained an optimistic attitude when discussing his future plans with Coachman.

"I would like to do something to help people and help the world," he said. "I actually just got off the phone with my neurologist here in Phoenix, and we were talking about doing stuff with concussion awareness and that sort of thing."

So even though Bryan's career is ending, his positive influence as a member of the WWE Universe figures to endure as he seeks out new opportunities in the months and years ahead.
