Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady Would Be Major Boost for Thin WWE Tag Team Division

Ryan DilbertFeb 10, 2016

The ailing, sluggish WWE tag team division needs a dose of energy and electricity in the form of Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady.

Repetition is hurting the WWE tag scene. So is an imbalance of babyfaces and heels. Blame a meager crop of top duos, too.

Luckily, WWE has some fixes waiting for it at NXT. American Alpha is a team on the rise, increasingly establishing a strong connection with the crowd. Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson have been masterful as throwback bruisers in the vein of the Minnesota Wrecking Crew.

It's The Realest Guys in the Room, though, who seem poised to get promoted next.

Amore and Cassady recently went on the road with the main roster. As noted by ProFightDB.com, the two worked a dark match before Main Event and wrestled at a house show last week. Expected speculation has followed.

Those kind of opportunities are often precursor to call-ups. They act as test runs.

And judging by the fan reaction to their entrance at a live event in San Jose, California, Amore and Cassay aced that test:

Getting that kind of response in front of the rabid Full Sail crowd is one thing. The entertaining act apparently travels well beyond that home base, though.

Wrestling writers have been primed to see what Amore and Cassady can do on a bigger stage for some time.

Back in September 2014, Brian Fritz of Between the Ropes and the Orlando Sentinel was calling for WWE to bring up Amore and Cassady. Last August, when it looked as if the tag team division was set to catch fire, Brandon Carney of Daily DDT wrote, "There's a way to set this division over the top. And that is to call up Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady."

That momentum has since stalled.

The Prime Time Players are no longer a unit, as Titus O'Neil has been climbing the ladder as a singles star. On top of that, PWInsider's Mike Johnson reported that WWE has suspended O'Neil for 90 days for "unprofessional conduct."

The Lucha Dragons are on hold as Kalisto focuses on the United States Championship. Los Matadores haven't been around in months. WWE hasn't done anything with The Ascension since joining forces with Stardust.

It's to the point where a teased R-Truth-Goldust pairing suddenly feels like a big deal.

That essentially leaves The Dudley Boyz, The Usos, The New Day and The Social Outcasts to battle it out again and again. The New Day's latest reign has been monotonous at times thanks to collisions with the same foes so many times in a row.

According to CageMatch.net, five of its 10 televised matches in 2016 have involved The Usos.

But who else is supposed to step up to the champs? That's harder to answer now that The Dudley Boyz look to have turned heel on Monday's Raw. WWE needs a fresh set of fan favorites to take on the division's villains, and Amore and Cassady are perfect.

Amore is one of the most engaging personalities working for WWE today. He's charismatic, eccentric and dazzling on the mic.

His improvement in the ring of late makes him even an more valuable asset. He and Cassady pulled off an excellent bout against Dawson and Wilder at NXT TakeOver: London to show just how far he's come in that department.

His partner boasts the kind of size WWE covets. He's not nearly as funny as Amore but connects well with the crowd.

Hall of Famer Jim Ross is among those who have taken notice of this team. He wrote in a December blog post, "Enzo Amore and Colin Cassidy are really over. Love their entertainment value and hope they can be as equally as successful when it's time for them to be dead serious."

They have done exactly that. During their feud with Wilder and Dawson, Amore and Cassady have thrived as angry, vengeful heroes on a quest for blood and gold.

The tag team division could certainly use performances of that caliber.

There isn't anyone able to mix it up with The New Day on the mic. In that way, Amore and Cassady would make great challengers for the current champs, as they are able to mix comedy and violence much the way The New Day has.

Having them feud with The Dudley Boyz would make for quite the introduction for the NXT stars.

Seeing Bubba Ray and D-Von face someone other than The New Day and The Wyatt Family would be a welcome change. And that veteran team is best suited as in-ring teachers working to put over younger talents.

WWE's options will multiply aplenty should Amore and Cassady arrive. Count on company officials' recognizing the connection those two are making at NXT and asking them to work their magic in a new setting soon.
