Winter Transfer Window 2016: List of Deadline Day Deals and Reaction

Christopher SimpsonFeb 2, 2016

For fans of many Premier League clubs, Monday was a deadline day to forget as the country's biggest teams failed to do any significant business. However, with the likes of Seydou Doumbia heading to Newcastle United, Oumar Niasse making his way to Everton and Stoke City splashing out on Giannelli Imbula, there were some important gains made in the transfer market.

Incredibly, none of the top eight Premier League clubs signed a single player in the final day of the winter transfer window.

Fans hoping for dramatic moves akin to Andy Carroll's transfer to Liverpool or Fernando Torres' move to Chelsea—both of which occurred on the same manic deadline day in 2011, along with the Reds' acquisition of Luis Suarezwere left disappointed.

The spending did continue throughout January and into the final day, though. As Rob Harris of the Associated Press revealed, the Premier League shelled out a record total of over £1 billion this season:

The biggest deal of the day came from Stoke as they spent a club-record £18.3 million on Porto midfielder Imbula, per BBC Sport.

Imbula, ostensibly a box-to-box midfielder by trade, will look to add further steel to the Potters' side. He's not known for his goalscoring, but Stoke fans will be happy if he can produce moments of magic such as this, per BT Sport:

The 23-year-old is also incredibly comfortable with the ball at his feet, as WhoScored.com reveal:

Joe Krishnan of the Evening Standard hailed his signing:

Football broadcaster and writer Dan Mason was less than enthused, though:

Newcastle made a strong step forward in the race for Premier League survival when they drafted in AS Roma's Doumbia on a loan deal until the end of the season, per BBC Sport.

BBC Sport's Oluwashina Okeleji was thrilled to see the arrival of the prolific Ivorian:

The 28-year-old should be a useful signing for a Magpies side that has struggled to score goals consistently this season—they've managed just 25 in 23 games—and as Squawka Football and Sky Sports reveal, Doumbia is a proven striker at Champions League level:

Everton also strengthened their forward options with the £13.5 million signing of Niasse from Lokomotiv Moscow, per BBC Sport.

Few Toffees fans are likely to be familiar with the Senegalese forward, but the club have snapped up a player in form.

Niasse has scored 13 goals and assisted 10 in all competitions this season, including this exquisite solo effort in the Europa League:

One of the most eyebrow-raising deals of the day came in the form of Steven Fletcher's shock move to Marseille. Bleacher Report UK summarised the reaction:

Nevertheless, Jones believes he could be set to earn more game time in France than he did with the Black Cats:

And so concludes another transfer window. With the Premier League's top sides failing to make any significant signings—for most of the window, let alone on deadline day—expect them to hit the transfer market hard in the summer.
