Super Bowl National Anthem 2016: Singer Info, Start Time and Prop Bet Lines
Last year in Super Bowl XLIX, Idina Menzel just couldn't let it go.
Had she let go of the final verse of the national anthem sooner, people who bet on the Frozen singer going under at two minutes and one second would've won some money.
Instead, Menzel went slightly over at two minutes and four seconds. It was only the second time in the last six Super Bowls (third time in the last 10 years) that the national anthem went over the two-minute mark, according to Odds Shark. Alicia Keys, anyone? She went two minutes and 35 seconds.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
At the time of this writing, the national anthem performer has yet to be announced. All we know is that the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos will meet in Super Bowl 50 on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET. As recent trends show, with the likes of Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Menzel earning the honor, it has to be someone who's trending in the music industry.
Jaime Uribarri of the New York Daily News posted a complete list of prop bets from OnlineGambling.lv, and the list includes choices on who will sing the national anthem and the over/under. Here's a rundown of the those props:
Prop Bet Info
Odds On Who Will Perform the National Anthem
- Adele: 3-1
- Taylor Swift: 5-1
- Ariana Grande: 10-1
- Blake Shelton: 14-1
- Christina Aguilera: 14-1
- Miley Cyrus: 15-1
Over/Under
- One minute, 57 seconds
Who Can We Rule Out?
Aguilera may be the first name taken off this list for two reasons: she did the national anthem for Super Bowl XLV, and she messed up the lyrics. Aguilera went one minute and 54 seconds in 2011, according to Odds Shark, but she could've hit the two-minute mark had she not goofed up. If given a second chance, she'd go over two minutes, but it doesn't seem likely.
Shelton would not be a bad choice for a solo act, but a man hasn't sung the national anthem since Billy Joel in Super Bowl XLI, per Odds Shark. Super Bowl XL featured Aretha Franklin with Aaron Neville, but there hasn't been a one-man act since that rainy day in Miami. If you're looking for irony, Joel performed the national anthem in a minute and a half the day Peyton Manning won his only Super Bowl championship, so take that how you will.
Cyrus has performed the national anthem before, but did so when she was a teen pop star sensation. For as much as Cyrus has tried to defend her reputation over the years, the NFL may not go in that direction.
And like Cyrus, Grande would appeal more to the younger fanbase. The NFL unknowingly did that with Menzel last year. Other than being a Tony Award winner, her popularity with this generation comes from voicing the character of Elsa in the Disney movie Frozen. But we're comparing two 20-something pop stars to a Broadway superstar. So, for now, ruling out Cyrus and Grande are safe bets.
Final Two: Adele vs. Taylor Swift
Either one of these two would make great choices. Adele has a voice that captivates the audience, and while there's nothing on record showing that the British star has sung the national anthem before, she has the capability of reaching Whitney Houston status from Super Bowl XXV.
Swift is no longer in the category of teen pop star. She's elevated herself into one of the most popular singers of this generation, appealing to a more adult demographic now. Plus, she just bought a mansion in Beverley Hills in late September. Google Maps says that a nonstop flight from Beverley Hills to Levi's Stadium would take an hour and 10 minutes. She'd be close by if she's in California.
Both of these singers would go under two minutes. Both are emotional singers, but neither of them are an Aguilera. They would be in the range of Underwood and Clarkson, who both sang in under one minute and 50 seconds.
Adele would be a grand slam choice, but Swift seems like the odds-on favorite right now. She's earned the right to perform the national anthem on the nation's biggest stage with her world-renowned success. Adele doesn't start her European tour until the end of February, but Swift should get the nod here.
