Full Matchday 22 Roundup
Tottenham Hotspur 4, Sunderland 1
Tottenham overcame a slow start against the club that's second-bottom in the league thanks to a four-goal explosion on Saturday.
After Patrick van Aanholt put Sunderland up 1-0 in the 40th minute, fourth-placed Spurs found an equalizer through Christian Eriksen two minutes later, his first of two on the day.
It was his second goal that grabbed the headlines, a left-footed smash from outside the box, as NBC Sports shows:
Mousa Dembele and a Harry Kane penalty rounded out the scoring for Tottenham, but the day belonged to Eriksen, who was quite content with his performance:
The loss ends Sunderland's brief run of good form after winning their last two Premier League games against Swansea and Aston Villa.
Bournemouth 3, Norwich City 0
Bournemouth picked up their first Premier League win since Dec. 16 with a convincing 3-0 win over Norwich City, who began Saturday two points above the Cherries in 15th place.
Dan Gosling's goal gave Bournemouth the lead in the 10th minute, which was doubled by Charlie Daniels' penalty in the 54th.
However, the best sight for Bournemouth fans might have been new signing Benik Afobe's goal. The man brought over from Wolverhampton scored his first goal in black and red, much to the delight of Daniels:
The loss was Norwich's second in three days, after dropping a Wednesday Premier League match to Stoke City 3-1.
Chelsea 3, Everton 3
Drama, questionable officiating and an overall exhilarating match. That's usually what happens when Chelsea are involved. On Saturday, though, they needed an equalizer from captain John Terry nine minutes into second-half stoppage time to earn a point.
It shouldn't have counted, as Terry was clearly offside, courtesy of Deadspin:
Nonetheless, his lovely backheel counted, and Everton manager Roberto Martinez was left fuming, per NBC Sports:
Terry made up for his own goal that opened the scoring in the 50th minute. Everton took a two-goal lead six minutes later, but Chelsea were quick to respond, scoring two goals in two minutes thanks to Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, starting in the 64th minute.
Everton's Ramiro Funes Mori looked to deliver the visitors three points with a goal in the 90th minute, but a bounty of added time gave Chelsea a chance to find a point, and they did.
Manchester City 4, Crystal Palace 0
The blue side of Manchester remain in third-place despite a 4-0 beatdown of eighth-place Crystal Palace, who have lost their third consecutive Premier League match.
The Eagles haven't scored a goal in their past five league matches.
Manchester City, on the other hand, had no problems scoring. A brace from Sergio Aguero ensured that the Argentinian reached a double-digit goal output in league play for the ninth consecutive season, per Eurosport UK.
David Silva and Fabian Delph also notched goals. Delph's goal was the opener, a 35-yard thunderbolt that stayed low and true, as NBC Deportes shows:
City will take part in an unlikely test in Matchday 23 when they take on sixth-placed West Ham United.
Newcastle United 2, West Ham United 1
Starting the weekend in fifth, West Ham dropped their first Premier League match since a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Tottenham on Nov. 22.
Two early goals from Newcastle delivered three points to Tyneside, with Ayoze Perez's sixth-minute opener followed by Georginio Wijnaldum's climax on a brilliant Newcastle move nine minutes later.
NUFC Online shows Newcastle's second goal:
It's three precious points for Newcastle, who move out of the relegation zone thanks to the win. Depending on Swansea's result on Monday against Watford, they can stay in 17th for at least a week.
Southampton 3, West Bromwich Albion 0
The Saints have won two-straight after a dreadful run of form that saw them lose eight of their last 10 matches in all competitions.
James Ward-Prowse carried Southampton with a pair of goals. His first was his finest, a fifth-minute free-kick that ever-so-gracefully floated into the back of the net, as Fresh Saints shows:
It's West Brom's first loss of the calendar year, after wins against Stoke, Bristol City and a draw against Chelsea.
Aston Villa 1, Leicester City 1
The surprising side toward the top of the table, Leicester City, dropped two points to the worst team in the league in Aston Villa.
With a point in hand, Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri spoke with Sky Sports News about his team's stellar and surprising first half of the season:
Villa hadn't recorded a point in the Premier League since Dec. 26, before Rudy Gestede's 75th-minute equalizer canceled out Shinji Okazaki's 28th-minute opener.
Leicester drops to second in the league, though, after Arsenal drew with Stoke.
Liverpool 0, Manchester United 1
A tense match from Anfield resulted in Manchester United's fourth-consecutive league win over Liverpool on Sunday.
United's winner came late, in the form of Wayne Rooney's volley in the 78th minute from a set piece—his first goal at Anfield since January of 2005, per ESPN FC.
True Red Devils shows the goal:
It was a historic one, too, as Manchester United point out:
United moved up to fifth with the win, while Liverpool remain entrenched in ninth-place. The Reds are still in search of their first league win of the 2016 calendar year.
Stoke City 0, Arsenal 0
It was physical, it was oftentimes bogged-down and it was goalless—Arsenal's draw with Stoke City in Sunday's finale saw them drop to third-place.
While the game was void of high points, Arsenal do indeed move back to the top of the league thanks to a superior goal differential compared to Leicester City's.
However, it could have been much worse. Stoke almost had the winner in the 90th minute, but a chance was cleared off Petr Cech's line to preserve the goalless draw and put the Gunners back on top of the Premier League.
