Recap

Sevilla survived a bad-tempered game against Malaga thanks to French striker Kevin Gameiro's brace. His goals made the difference, despite midfielder Vicente Iborra picking up two yellow cards for rash challenges inside the final 10 minutes.

Arthur Boka followed suit for Malaga, getting booked twice in stoppage time. BBC Sport's Andy West detailed the bizarre sequence of events leading to Boka's dismissal:

Boka's infractions wasted the foothold striker Charles had given Malaga by getting the visitors back into the game.

For Gameiro, his goals continued his recent dominance in front of the home fans, as noted by OptaJose:

The day's real excitement was provided by Celta and bottom-of-the-table Levante, who engaged in a seven-goal thriller at Balaidos. John Guidetti scored twice for the hosts, before Iago Aspas and Fabian Orellana added to Vigo's tally.

Deyverson and Pedro Lopez Munoz bagged two goals in as many minutes to get Levante back into things during the second half, after Celta had gone three up. Winger Jose Luis Morales netted the final goal of the day, but it wasn't enough for the away side.

Orellana's goal helped celebrate a landmark occasion for the Chilean international, per OptaJavier:

But Orellana wasn't the only Celta attacker to distinguish himself. Aspas provided the assist for Orellana after scoring himself just before the hour mark.

Netting and supplying in the same game has become a rare occurrence for the 28-year-old forward:

Having seen two rivals win, Villarreal really needed to do the same at home to Real Betis. But the Yellow Submarine was stymied in front of home fans at El Madrigal.

For Villarreal manager Marcelino, the drab stalemate is a familiar occurrence against this opposition:

Spanish publication AS felt like the home side lacked verve going forward:

Dropping two points could well prove costly for the Yellow Submarine. Their attack has been inconsistent, while Sevilla's and Celta's forward lines are in form and firing.

Deportivo went in front in Sociedad when Luis Alberto latched onto an errant back pass. But La Coruna were just as indebted to the linesman's flag and some wayward finishing from the home side.

Sid Lowe of the Guardian applauded Sociedad's intent and application up front, particularly Mexican forward Carlos Vela's creativity:

Sociedad's persistence did pay off when Xabi Prieto tucked away a penalty with 15 minutes of normal time remaining. The spot-kick was a soft one, but on a day when they had three goals disallowed, Sociedad were perhaps due a slice of luck.

A point apiece has done little for both sides, although Sociedad did leapfrog Espanyol into 13th place.

The race for the top four has certainly heated up with both Sevilla and Celta winning. It's Villarreal who are the day's big losers after their blunt display against Betis.

Marcelino must find a way to get more goals from his team on a consistent basis. If not, then the Yellow Submarine will be caught in the scramble for the right to play UEFA Champions League football next season.
