Winners and Losers of the 2016 Army All-American Bowl

Sanjay KirpalaniJan 9, 2016

The 2016 edition of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl is in the books as the West squad defeated the East 37-9 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

While fans across the country got to see recruits who could make an impact for their favorite schools as soon as this fall, there’s still plenty of work to do for those players who have still yet to make a decision on where they will commit.

However, some teams got some good news, as five players announced their commitments during the game while others are left to regroup after missing out on them.

Additionally, some committed players backed up their lofty prep accolades and displayed why fans should be anxious in anticipating their arrival on campus.

Who makes up the winners and losers from the 2016 Army All-American Bowl?

Winner: Georgia

In addition to getting a chance to view 5-star pledge and potential quarterback of the future Jacob Eason, Georgia fans have reason to be excited after the school landed 5-star tight end Isaac Nauta.

Despite the changeover from Mark Richt to Kirby Smart at head coach, the Bulldogs were able to keep the centerpiece of their 2016 class, Eason, and add one of their key remaining targets despite a fierce push from Alabama and Michigan.

Adding Nauta and  Eason gives new offensive coordinator Jim Chaney a pair of building blocks to work with over the next few years.

It also gives Smart and his staff plenty of ammunition necessary to help the Bulldogs close out the 2016 class on a strong note.

Loser: Texas A&M

For most of the recruiting process, Texas A&M appeared to be the destination for 4-star defensive tackle Ross Blacklock

The 6’4”, 326-pounder visited College Station last month, and the optimism was high that he would select the Aggies, as detailed by Taylor Hamm of GigEm247.

However, Blacklock switched gears and committed to fellow Lone Star State power TCU.

Given the Aggies' struggles on defense since joining the SEC in 2012, losing in-state leans such as Blacklock is a big blow to Texas A&M and a trend head coach Kevin Sumlin and his staff need to reverse soon if they expect to reach new heights as a program.

Winner: Michigan

While Michigan may have lost out on Isaac Nauta, the Wolverines still added another weapon for 4-star quarterback pledge Brandon Peters when they landed 4-star receiver Dylan Crawford.

Crawford, who hails from California, selected the Wolverines over schools such as Miami, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and Washington.

Crawford's addition continues an impressive push by head coach Jim Harbaugh and his staff to add top talent from coast to coast.

With Crawford’s pledge, Michigan now sits with the nation’s No. 2 class and has a great opportunity to grab the No. 1 spot if it can continue to land top targets down the stretch.

Loser: Oregon

Receiver is one of the bigger needs in the 2016 cycle for the Oregon Ducks and head coach Mark Helfrich.

The Ducks have two talented wideouts committed in 4-star Dillon Mitchell and 3-star Eddie McDoom.

However, the Ducks were among the final group of programs in the hunt for both Dylan Crawford and fellow 4-star receiver Javon McKinley—who selected Notre Dame.

The cupboard certainly isn’t bare in Eugene when it comes to playmakers at receiver, but losing out on two pass-catchers in the heart of Pac-12 territory to schools from the Midwest is a blow to the Ducks’ 2016 class.

Winner: Stanford

5 of 7

After winning the Pac-12 title, Stanford carries a ton of momentum into the final stretch before Feb. 3's national signing day.

The Cardinal have the Pac-12’s top recruiting class, which is rated No. 13 nationally.

The fruits of that class were on display during Saturday’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

4-star quarterback KJ Costello fired two touchdown passes for the West squad, as detailed by the U.S. Army All-America Bowl’s Twitter account.

Additionally, Stanford pledges helped set up the first two scores for the West squad.

Simi Fehoko, a 4-star receiver, caught a 35-yard touchdown pass for the game’s first points, and then 4-star linebacker Curtis Robinson recovered a fumble inside the 5-yard line that set up a short touchdown run on the subsequent possession.

Overall, the Cardinal are well on their way toward reloading for the future under head coach David Shaw.

Loser: Ohio State

6 of 7

When it comes to excellence in recruiting, not many can match what Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has been able to accomplish throughout his coaching career.

The Buckeyes once again are having a banner class with a Top Five group headed to Columbus as things stand.

But with Michigan adding Dylan Crawford, the Buckeyes fell to No. 3 overall in the 247Sports team rankings—one spot below the hated Wolverines.

Additionally, Ohio State lost out on 4-star receiver Donnie Corley—who selected Michigan State over the Buckeyes during Saturday’s game.

As Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports detailed, it was a very close battle between the Buckeyes and Spartans for Corley.

“Last night I talked to my parents' it was kind of tough. I’m probably still not like this is the school this is the school, but I had to make a decision due to time limit," Corley told Wiltfong.

While things didn’t go the Buckeyes' way with Corley, OSU is still expected to make a major push toward landing the No. 1 overall class in the final weeks before national signing day.

Winner: Shea Patterson

7 of 7

While most of the quarterbacks struggled to find a rhythm in Saturday’s game, one player who was firing on all cylinders from the start is 5-star quarterback and current Ole Miss commit Shea Patterson.

The nation’s No. 2 pro-style passer was on the throwing end of the game’s first score, delivering a perfect strike to Simi Fehoko on a post route.

Patterson added a 10-yard scoring pass to Javon McKinley in the second quarter en route to capturing MVP honors for the game, as noted by the U.S. Army All-American Bowl’s Twitter account.

It was another feather in the cap of Patterson—who also captured MVP honors at Elite 11 camp last summer—in his quest to be crowned as the top overall quarterback in the 2016 cycle.
