PDC William Hill World Darts Championship Final 2016: Score and Prize Money Info

Gianni VerschuerenJan 3, 2016

Gary Anderson successfully defended his title at the 2016 PDC World Darts Championship on Sunday, winning a close final against former champion Adrian Lewis by a score of 7-5 at London's Alexandra Palace.

The two combined for a sensational match, with the lead changing frequently until the Flying Scotsman shifted gear in the middle of the match.

Jackpot launched a furious comeback late, but a key 170 checkout from Anderson in the final leg made the difference. Per Live Darts, the Scot becomes just the third player in PDC history to retain the title.

Here's a look at the full prize-money breakdown:

Gary Anderson£300,000
Adrian Lewis£150,000
Semi-Finals£70,000
Quarter-Finals£35,000
Third Round£22,000
Second Round£15,000
First Round£10,000
Preliminary Round£4,250

For the second straight year, Anderson emerged victorious from a thrilling final. He beat darts legend Phil Taylor in a decider in 2015 and needed 12 sets to get past Lewis one year later.

The Flying Scotsman and Jackpot combined for one of the most memorable finals in years, with the lead switching throughout the early stages of the match. Jackpot made the brighter start, taking the first set 3-1 before the defending champion won six of the next seven legs to grab a 2-1 lead.

BetVictor was impressed:

Mistakes started to creep in by the fourth set, however. Anderson hit on a beautiful 121 checkout only to bust in the next leg, allowing Lewis to pull level. The champion's head seemed to be in a different place at times, and Lewis took full advantage, taking out 77 in the decider to tie things up.

The fifth set played out in almost the exact same fashion, as the Flying Scotsman squandered another early lead, with Lewis eventually landing double-five to move ahead.

Bet365 was loving the action:

Jackpot then broke throw with an 11-darter and seemed to be on his way to the win, but Anderson woke up just in time, breaking straight back and winning the next two legs as well, finishing on the bull to level things once again.

Another break followed in the seventh, and the Flying Scotsman—helped by Lewis' two missed darts to stay in the set—was really starting to gain steam at this point.

The eighth saw Anderson bust yet again, this time on an 86 finish. But fortunately for the Scotsman, Lewis couldn't take advantage, and Anderson moved ahead 5-3. All momentum was now with the champion, but to his credit, Lewis fought tooth and nail to stay in the match. A 121 checkout in the next set had Ladbrokes buzzing:

A whitewash saw Anderson's advantage reduced to 5-4, but the wheels finally seemed to come off for Lewis in the 10th set. Anderson kicked things off with an 86 checkout before doubling his lead, as Lewis missed tops again. Another ton-plus finish from Anderson moved him within one set of retaining his title, as he led 6-4.

But after a short break, it was Lewis' turn to impress again. A break of throw in the opening leg was followed by an 18th 180 from Jackpot, who won a whitewash of his own to close the gap to a single set again.

He immediately grabbed the lead in the next set before Anderson finally won another leg, and in typical fashion, the Flying Scotsman elevated his game when it mattered the most, landing a huge 170 checkout at a crucial time before grabbing the final leg.

Per Live Darts, Lewis expressed his disappointment with the result, although he managed to take away the positives from his World Championship campaign:

Anderson was one of the standout performers of the past season, but a second straight title is undoubtedly the highlight of the year for the Scot. He seems to love playing at the Alexandra Palace, and the likes of Taylor and Michael van Gerwen will face a huge task of stopping him from repeating again next year.
