Whaley Comments on Job Security

Tuesday, Dec. 29

"Ownership has been great," Whaley said on WGR 550. "My relationship with Rex Ryan is something I cherish and I wake up happy every day to work with him"

"Until ownership tells me my keys don't work, I'm here," Whaley added.

Whaley's Future with Bills Is Secure

Sunday, Dec. 27

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported on Dec. 27 that "Whaley is on very solid ground" and that there is a "better chance he gets an extension than fired."

Rapoport added:

Bills Continue to Struggle as Whaley's Contract Comes to Close

The Bills have gone 21-25 in Whaley's three seasons as general manager. Whaley has one year left on his contract after this season.

Rapoport's report contradicts a story from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. In that report, La Canfora noted that Whaley has clashed with the coaching staff, would favor firing offensive coordinator Greg Roman and would like to see the team get young wideout Sammy Watkins more involved in the offense. He also noted that the Bills wanted to hire Bill Polian to function in the "football czar" role.

Polian turned down the role, though he has considered working with the team as a consultant, per Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News. Ryan also denied there was a rift between him and his GM, per Carucci.

If the Bills don't improve next season, and more reports continue to leak about him having a contentious relationship with the coaching staff, Whaley's tenure in Buffalo will likely come to a close.
