Overview
Sri Lanka's top order will have been left scratching their heads after the first ODI in Christchurch. Not one batsman in the top five managed to get into double figures as New Zealand's Matt Henry ripped the top order apart.
Milinda Siriwardana and Nuwan Kulasekara spared some of the visitors' blushes with a half century each, but it wasn't enough to avoid a mammoth defeat, with the Black Caps winning by seven wickets and 174 balls still to spare.
The second ODI will be played at the first venue, so Sri Lanka will have had a little bit more time to adapt, but New Zealand have never lost here. The Black Caps also have momentum on their side and Sri Lanka will have to dig deep to find the motivation to get out of this slump.
They are not without talent. Dinesh Chandimal had a decent Test series, but they need their bowlers to come to the party. There is no Lasith Malinga after he was ruled out of the series, and they will need their other bowlers to step up and make inroads against a batting side that is brimming with confidence.
Key players
New Zealand
Martin Guptill just can't stop scoring runs at the moment. After a solid Test series, he contributed 79 off 56 in the first ODI to help New Zealand to victory. His contribution at the top of the order is always important to help New Zealand set a solid platform.
Sri Lanka
Dinesh Chandimal hasn't had the best year in one-day cricket, having scored just 289 runs in 14 ODIs this year, but he is incredibly talented. This is the perfect opportunity for Chandimal to make his mark and help lift Sri Lanka.
