2016 QB Targets for a Texas A&M Program Now with Immediate Need
Quickly: Name Texas A&M's fourth-string quarterback entering the month of December.
That fourth-stringer, Conner McQueen, is now the backup quarterback with less than two weeks remaining before the Aggies head to Nashville, Tennessee, to face Louisville in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30. And for what it's worth, there aren't many outside of College Station, Texas, who know the name of the Aggies' starting quarterback.
After Thursday's news of Kyler Murray's plans to transfer, which came after last week's news of Kyle Allen's transfer, Jake Hubenak takes over starting duties for the Aggies. Texas A&M not only lost both of its 5-star quarterbacks but also is now under the leadership of a junior college transfer who appeared in only four games in a reserve role.
And if Hubenak is unable to go, McQueen's only action has been on special teams, as he's the holder for extra-point attempts and field goals.
In short, Texas A&M is in need of a quarterback or two. Badly.
Here's what may be worse from a recruiting standpoint: The Aggies have 17 commits, but none of them is a quarterback. Even though Texas A&M has 5-star Tate Martell committed for the 2017 class, quarterback is a position that is suddenly important with signing day only two months away.
Here are seven players who the Aggies could target between now and the Feb. 3 signing day. Players are listed in alphabetical order.
3-Star Seth Green
1 of 7
Hometown (school): Allen, Texas (Allen HS)
Size: 6'4", 216 lbs
247Sports composite ranking: No. 349 overall (No. 10 dual)
Is there a chance Kevin Sumlin can go from recruiting one Allen High School quarterback to another? Seth Green switched his commitment from Oregon to Minnesota Sunday, but as we all know, verbal commitments are nonbinding.
Texas A&M hasn't offered Green, but he showed he could play for one of Texas high school's powerhouse programs. He split starter's minutes with Mitchell Jonke and helped Allen win 57 consecutive games before losing in the Texas Class 6A state semifinals.
3-Star Justice Hansen
2 of 7
Hometown (school): Edmond, Oklahoma (Butler Community College)
Size: 6'3", 215 lbs
247Sports composite JUCO ranking: No. 84 overall (No. 2 dual)
With a year of junior college ball under his belt, Justice Hansen could not only be an immediate answer for the Aggies but the future of Texas A&M football. The one-time Oklahoma quarterback reportedly is interested in getting a shot as a starter with A&M, according to Taylor Hamm of 247Sports.
Hansen threw for nearly 1,700 yards and only recorded two interceptions for Butler, one of the premier junior colleges in the country. He isn't afraid of competition, as he competed for the Oklahoma starting job with Baker Mayfield, Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas. His experience alone would be beneficial for a Texas A&M team that is looking to beef up its quarterback roster for the 2016 season.
4-Star Jalen Hurts
3 of 7
Hometown (school): Channelview, Texas (Channelview HS)
Size: 6'2", 208 lbs
247Sports composite ranking: No. 197 (No. 6 dual)
Alabama landed a solid get over the summer in Jalen Hurts, a quarterback the Aggies have had their eyes on for some time. There was a time when Hurts was considered a primary target. His stats are proof that he can play; he accounted for more than 3,700 yards and 51 total touchdowns as a senior.
A coach's son, Hurts thrives on making the right decisions. In turn, he's also someone who can be a reliable game manager and a quarterback who knows how to get the first down in tough situations. While Texas A&M is hoping to flip him, Alabama will want to keep him committed.
3-Star Trent Hosick
4 of 7
Hometown (school): Kansas City (Arizona Western College)
Size: 6'0", 230 lbs
247Sports composite JUCO ranking: No. 101 overall (No. 4 dual)
Considered a winner in high school in Missouri, Trent Hosick can make a lot of good things happen with his arm and his legs. He helped put Staley High School on the map, and he was a playmaker on the junior college circuit, splitting time with Emanuel Gant.
Hosick has offers from BYU and San Diego State, and while he hasn't received an offer from the Aggies, he has an interest in the program and what it's done in recent years, as reported by Brian Peronni of 247Sports. Hosick, who originally signed with Missouri out of high school, committed to BYU in May but recently decommitted Nov. 30.
3-Star David Moore
5 of 7
Hometown (school): Alpharetta, Georgia (Milton)
Size: 6'2", 170 lbs
247Sports composite ranking: No. 919 overall (No. 25 dual)
The one thing about David Moore is that even though he lives in Georgia, he is a fan of Texas and wanted to play college football in Texas. He took advantage of a great opportunity by committing to SMU, as first-year head coach Chad Morris brings tons of excitement to the Dallas area.
With that said, playing in the SEC versus the American Athletic Conference could intrigue Moore. The Aggies haven't offered him, but he has been in contact with both offensive coordinator Jake Spavital and running backs coach Clarence McKinney. Moore could be a diamond in the rough.
3-Star Nick Starkel
6 of 7
Hometown (school): Argyle, Texas (Liberty Christian School)
Size: 6'3 ½", 186 lbs
247Sports composite ranking: No. 636 overall (No. 22 pro)
After decommitting from Oklahoma State earlier this week, Nick Starkel has been a big "what if" with some Texas A&M fans. Kevin Sumlin and the staff extended an offer back in May, and Starkel has had some interest in the Aggies for quite some time.
Starkel threw for nearly 3,100 yards and 29 touchdowns during his senior year. UCLA could be a major contender in landing Starkel after offering him Tuesday. Whichever school lands Starkel gets an Elite 11 finalist who has a strong arm and a leader's mentality.
4-Star Dillon Sterling-Cole
7 of 7
Hometown (school): Houston (Westfield HS)
Size: 6'2 ½", 183 lbs
247Sports composite ranking: No. 302 overall (No. 12 pro)
Of all the quarterbacks considered in this situation, Dillon Sterling-Cole might make the most sense because he's an Aggies legacy. His father, Chris Cole, was a productive wide receiver for R.C. Slocum in the 1990s before seeing time in the NFL.
An Elite 11 finalist, Sterling-Cole committed to Arizona State in July. He chose the Sun Devils over Texas A&M, Houston and other programs, but now with the Aggies' quarterback situation the way it is, look for them to push for Sterling-Cole in the 11th hour.
