Benjamin: Contract Extension Is '75 to 80 Percent' Done

Mary Kay Cabot of Northeast Ohio Media Group passed along what the speedy wideout had to say about his future. NFL Network's Rand Getlin provided more details:
Benjamin is a holdover from the Tom Heckert-Mike Holmgren regime as a 2012 fourth-round draft pick. It's taken awhile to come to fruition, but the 25-year-old has now established himself as one of the NFL's premier deep threats and is an excellent punt returner.
Despite the Browns' starting three different quarterbacks this season and having a last-ranked rushing offense, Benjamin has still produced a career year. He has 826 yards receiving on 54 receptions and five touchdowns.
This is a contract year for Benjamin, but Cleveland is bidding to not let him reach free agency before retaining him for the long haul.
Explosive as Benjamin is, he has a slight, slender frame (5'10", 175 lbs) and needs a bigger complement in the receiving corps to maximize his effectiveness. After the receiver tore an ACL in 2013, though, the Browns have to be thrilled about Benjamin's current production.
The team announced star tight end Gary Barnidge agreed to an extension Thursday, which bodes well for Benjamin's negotiations. For all the premier playmakers Browns general manager Ray Farmer has been criticized for passing over, he's at least being proactive about retaining the team's best current pass-catchers.
If Benjamin joins Barnidge and Josh Gordon indeed returns in 2016 from a one-year suspension, Cleveland suddenly has a dangerous-looking passing attack on paper. One additional offensive weapon would do wonders for whomever the Browns trot out at QB in 2016 and beyond.
