Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
NXT and WWE provided some of the highlights:
Scott Fishman of the Miami Herald broke down what makes Corbin such a great heel:
Crews has taken NXT by storm since debuting at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn due to his incredible combination of athleticism and strength. However, Corbin didn't take kindly to the hype.
That was apparent during Crews' NXT Championship match against Finn Balor. The combatants were evenly matched, and Crews was potentially on the verge of winning, but Corbin ruined that by interfering.
The usually laid-back and mild-mannered Crews was incensed by Corbin's actions, which resulted in him retaliating. He also called out the Lone Wolf and challenged him to a match in his most impassioned promo to date, as seen in this video courtesy of WWE NXT on Twitter:
Corbin has been waiting his turn for a shot at the title and the main event scene for quite some time, while Crews was put in that position almost immediately.
Crews was on the receiving end of Corbin's frustration in that regard, and it led to what was billed as one of the top matches on the entire NXT TakeOver: London card.
While there was no official designation, it can be argued that Wednesday's bout was essentially a No. 1 contender's match considering where Crews and Corbin are on the card currently.
That should play itself out in the coming weeks, but there is little doubt that Corbin's profile received a significant boost by beating a Superstar who is arguably already the No. 2 face on the NXT roster behind Balor.
Corbin has often fallen short in big matches as he lost to Samoa Joe at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn and then followed that up with a loss to Joe and Balor alongside Rhino in the final of the Dusty Rhodes Classic at NXT TakeOver: Respect.
Things finally turned around for him in London, and it creates an interesting situation both for him and Crews.
Although Corbin has a lot of work to do in terms of improving his in-ring work and mic skills, the writers may have finally gotten him some true heat, and it must be taken advantage of.
Crews, on the other hand, must be booked in a way that helps him overcome the loss and continue trending toward the top of NXT.
It's fair to say that the result of the match was a surprising one, but it could turn out to be a positive for the product depending upon what direction the creative team goes in.
