Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate Post-Week 13 Fantasy Advice

Daniel KramerDec 3, 2015

The Detroit Lions were all but eliminated on Aaron Rodgers' gutsy Hail Mary to hand the Lions a 27-23 loss, their eighth of the season.

But before a late fade, the Lions offense once again lit up the scoreboard, as quarterback Matthew Stafford appears to have regained Pro Bowl form, which has benefited fantasy owners of receivers Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate.

Over the past four games, Stafford has thrown for 1,081 yards and nine touchdowns with one interception.

Stafford is owned in just 78.9 percent of leagues following the Lions’ sluggish 1-7 start, but he continues to show his ceiling is back among the fantasy elite—and he's been even better than reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers of late, as NFL Fantasy Football showed:

Given Stafford’s limited ownership, he is at least worth a waiver-wire add and has perhaps even re-emerged for QB1 consideration.

The Lions’ final four games are against teams that are unlikely to reach the playoffs—the St. Louis Rams, New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears—meaning Stafford could pay huge dividends in the fantasy playoffs.

Although 2015 has been a down year for the All-Pro receiver, Johnson remains a must-start each week.

He’s not registering the historical figures from a few seasons ago—he nearly became the first receiver to eclipse 2,000 yards in 2012—but he’s still averaging a respectable 10.9 fantasy points per game.

Anyone who thought Megatron was no longer among the league’s elite got an acrobatic reminder Thursday, per NFL on TNF:

Johnson has been battling an ankle injury in recent weeks but showed his ability to persevere through pain Thursday. Should Stafford’s impressive streak continue, Johnson’s will as well.

Tate was arguably the biggest steal among fantasy receivers last year—benefiting from more targets while Johnson missed three games because of an ankle injury—but has largely been a disappointment in 2015.

He entered Week 13 averaging 5.6 points per game, well below his preseason projections as a mid-round WR2 selection. He has played in all 12 games, but he has eclipsed double-digit fantasy points only twice and was again limited Thursday.

Tate might be a worthy waiver add—he’s available in 23.1 percent of leagues—but isn’t more than a roll-of-the-dice option.
