Jacksonville Jaguars Week 13 Stock Report

Evan ReierDec 1, 2015

A sour result last Sunday shut down the Jacksonville Jaguars' hopes to start a winning streak, but the 31-25 loss to the San Diego Chargers did a lot to show where the team has improved and the major flaws it has going forward.

The positives came pretty much everywhere except the red zone, and that went for both sides of the ball. Poorly timed mistakes and a lack of execution sunk the Jaguars, and they have even more work to do to keep the chance for the playoffs alive.

The Jaguars' overall stock took a dip by not defeating the Chargers—a team that had lost six straight games coming in, but it's still progressed from various points earlier in the season and before the season.

And the Jaguars still have a lot to play for. The fans are still expecting results, the players are still expecting quality play from themselves, and there could be some staff changes should the season not finish well.

There's still a lot on the line in the final five games, and bouncing back with a road win over the Tennessee Titans this weekend can start that. It won't be an easy road, but it's the one the Jaguars are traveling.

Jason Myers, Despite Missed PAT, Receives a Slight Stock Boost

1 of 5

Kicker Jason Myers saw a lot of action last Sunday, knocking down four field-goal attempts and completing one of his two extra-point tries. While the missed PAT was baffling, his overall performance is improving.

There is still some doubt, and there will continue to be if he keeps missing PATs, but it's apparent he is getting better and more comfortable in his role as an NFL starting kicker.

Sure, three of his kicks were from "gimme" range, but he also knocked down a 51-yard attempt; Myers has missed those short kicks in the past. Sunday should've been a confidence-inspiring day for him.

The jury's still out on whether Myers can kick in the NFL long term, but he has made strides this year, and his talent is unquestioned. It's just a matter of finding the consistency and confidence to make it happen every game.

Chris Clemons Horrifies on Sunday, Takes a Drop in Stock

2 of 5

Defensive end Chris Clemons turned out to be a great free-agent signing for the 2014 season, but in 2015, he's been a major letdown. And Sunday may have been his worst performance in a Jaguars uniform—two offside penalties, one tackle and no hits or threatening pressure on the QB.

For a guy who was brought in to thrive at the "Leo" position in his twilight, it seems that we may have already gotten past the "twilight" and moved to pitch-black midnight.

Sunday showed Clemons at his worse: futile, frustrated and offbeat. He's never been the most "disciplined" player, but two early jumps in situations that the Jaguars needed him to be at his best rather than his worst were obvious made it hard to defend the rest of the game.

He undoubtedly has a purpose with the 2015 season, but he's taking less snaps than ever and isn't really doing much to warrant as much as he's getting. Two sacks on the season, for his salary and expectations, is not enough.

Clemons will likely be gone by next year. He is slipping as the season goes on. The Leo group's entirety hasn't been good, but Clemons is considered the most important and productive member, and he simply hasn't been.

Roy Miller Dominates on the Inside, Earns a Stock Increase

3 of 5

While Clemons struggled on the outside, defensive tackle Roy Miller continued to excel on the inside. Four solo tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack made up his Sunday, and it's fair to say he was one of the team's few bright spots.

Miller has escalated his play considerably since the beginning of the 2014 season, and Sunday may have been one of his best performances yet. Sure, Chargers running back Melvin Gordon was able to rack up a decent 4.3 yards per carry, but it certainly wasn't through the interior.

The Chargers did a good job of running the ball outside to play against the strengths of the Jaguars' run defense, and when they did go up the middle, Miller and company we're ready. They continue to deserve credit for their stout play.

Miller adding a sack on Sunday was an added bonus. He's never been a quick-enough guy to get to the QB consistently, but he's made things difficult this year that's apparent through his three sacks on the season.

He's a really, really good player. He's not a star like injured fellow DT Sen'Derrick Marks, but he makes a difference in an area that doesn't always get the most praise. The Jaguars are fortunate to have him.

Marqise Lee Continuing to Struggle on Return, Gets a Stock Drop

4 of 5

Wide receiver Marqise Lee has dealt with a tough "injury bug" throughout his career, but he's now healthy and looking to make an impact. The only problem is that he's failed to do so as of late.

It was nice to see him get 10 yards on his gamely sweep, and he only was targeted once for a three-yard grab, but it's not like Lee isn't starting to see more snaps. He's now either fully recovered or pretty close, so it might be time for him to try and end the season on a high note.

And now with WR Allen Hurns' status up in the air, thanks to his concussion on Sunday, he may get that chance. The Jaguars will expect everyone to step up, but Lee is a guy who has a prime opportunity to progress past his injury woes.

Predictably, he's been a little out-of-sync, but this weekend will be his fourth game since coming back from his nagging hamstring. It's time for Lee, in some way, to bring some explosiveness through the air like he's been expected to do.

Julius Thomas Continuing to Progress, Receives a Cautious Stock Boost

5 of 5

The marquee free-agent signing of the offseason, tight end Julius Thomas hadn't been that big-name, big-play player the Jaguars were expecting. Whether this was due to injury, a change of location or something else, it hadn't clicked for most of the season.

But last Thursday, Thomas made a sizable contribution, including that go-ahead TD. Many wondered if that would be the kickstart he needed, and judging by Sunday's performance, it was.

Thomas caught nine passes on 10 targets for 116 yards and a touchdown. He made two really huge plays and was a consistent option for quarterback Blake Bortles from the early stages to the final minutes.

This is starting to look like the Thomas we saw in Denver—the one who looked like an unfair matchup for any defender and one who scored 24 TDs over two seasons. If that version has awakened, the Jaguars may have acquired another stellar receiving option.

The Jaguars need their pieces to start coming together, if not for this season, then for the next. And Thomas starting to show progress and potentially looking to end the season with a strong finish would go a long way toward that.
