Jahlil Okafor Reportedly to Have Security Guard Accompany Him in Public
Given the slew of off-court issues for Philadelphia 76ers center Jahlil Okafor, the team has designated a security guard for the star rookie, according to Chris Broussard of ESPN.com.
The move to protect its investment—the team selected Okafor with the third overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft—comes just days after the 19-year-old was involved in a brawl outside a Boston nightclub.
It was the second such incident Okafor has been linked to, as the former Duke star had a gun pulled on him in an exchange outside a club in Philadelphia in October, according to John Gonzalez of CSNPhilly.com.
Aside from those reported altercations, Okafor was allegedly pulled over for driving 108 mph, according to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, and also attempted to use a fake ID at a Philadelphia bar, according to Gonzalez.
Okafor's reported misconduct prompted reactions on social media under the hashtag #StuffJahlilDid, many of which consisted of sarcastic quips about his alarming number of missteps.
Okafor publicly addressed his behavior in a series of tweets Sunday:
The 76ers on Sundy tied the NBA record for most losses to start a season (18) and have lost 28 straight games dating back to last year—the longest losing streak in major professional sports in the United States, according to ESPN.
Philadelphia drafted Okafor to help the team change its losing ways. Though that has not happened, he leads all rookies with 17.5 points per game.
Under a watchful eye, perhaps Okafor's off-court conduct will match his on-court play.
