10 WWE Superstars Who Must Be Repackaged Immediately
Coming up with a sustainable gimmick is almost as important to a WWE Superstar as being able to run the ropes or apply a proper hammerlock. Some wrestlers are at their best when they are themselves, while others need a character completely different from their own personality. Whatever the case may be, the 10 Superstars on this list need a change.
If you look back through the history books, many examples can be found of Superstars who were having trouble connecting with the crowd being saved by a total overhaul of their gimmick.
Mean Mark Callous was a big fat nothing in WCW, but he thrived as The Undertaker in WWE. Isaac Yankem, DDS, didn't have lasting power, but he has excelled as Kane for over a decade. It's safe to say we all remember Triple H as the Connecticut blue blood before he found success with D-Generation X.
All it takes is a little creativity and effort to turn someone from a joke into someone the fans will cheer for, and all anyone on this list needs is for management to take a chance on them.
Let's take a look at 10 Superstars who are in desperate need of a character upgrade.
10. Adam Rose
1 of 9When Adam Rose first debuted as a party animal with a crew of equally strange weirdos by his side, we all knew it was a gimmick that would eventually have to change.
The sad part is WWE turned him into a party pooper without any real explanation for his change of heart or any kind of character development to let everyone know he had changed.
When Rose first started rising through the ranks of NXT, he was known as Leo Kruger. He was much more intense and had a militant personality.
This is the character WWE should be using. By making Rose into someone who seems dangerous would make him a much more successful Superstar.
It's not Rose's fault WWE dropped the ball with him, but it feels like he is making little effort to make any kind of a change. It's up to him to make management see the light.
He got a lot of exposure when ESPN ran their E:60: Behind the Curtain special. Fans connected with him because his story was so genuine. If WWE could bottle that, they would have the formula for greatness.
9. R-Truth
2 of 9Remember when R-Truth was in the main event of a pay-per-view challenging John Cena for the WWE Championship? It feels like so long ago you could be forgiven for not remembering it.
Truth is one of those Superstars who has all the tools to be successful, but for one reason or another, he has never managed to reach his full potential.
He was in the main event of Survivor Series 2011 alongside The Miz against John Cena and The Rock, but it's been one setback after another ever since.
WWE doesn't need to develop a whole new gimmick to make Truth successful. He just needs to revert back to his insane character. He was one of the most entertaining wrestlers when he was dressing in Confederate uniforms and talking to Little Jimmy all the time.
Nowadays, he is little more than a jobber, so WWE has nothing to lose by taking one more chance with him.
8. Heath Slater
3 of 9Heath Slater is one of those Superstars who confuses a lot of people. He has had minimal success since Nexus broke up in 2011, and many wonder why he is even still employed by WWE.
We all know the company needs punching bags, but Slater has some good qualities that could be channeled into an entertaining gimmick.
His group 3MB was starting to get over when WWE released Drew McIntyre and Jinder Mahal in 2014, but WWE never truly attempted to parlay their popularity.
It's time for Slater to move on from the One Man Band gimmick and try something new. He has the passion and drive to make anything he is given work, but he just needs an opportunity to prove he can do it on his own.
Pairing him up with another Superstar might be the key. He was always better in a tag team situation, and there are plenty of other guys on the roster who could partner up with him to form another team.
7. Bo Dallas
4 of 9Bo Dallas is one of the biggest disappointments in a long time. Dallas himself isn't disappointing. It's WWE's failure to use him properly that feels like such a letdown.
When he was in NXT, Dallas was having great matches with guys such as Neville and Sami Zayn, but when he was brought up to the main roster, it took all of a few months for him to go from funny to sad.
The best possible option is to have him drop the Bolieve gimmick and join his brother in The Wyatt Family. Just because he doesn't have a Duck Dynasty-style beard doesn't mean he wouldn't make a great follower.
Everyone knows he is Bray Wyatt's brother in real life, so WWE should capitalize on that and push them as a team. He would add a new element to the group that has been missing, and it would help him be taken seriously.
If he was paired up with Wyatt, it would allow him to embrace the intense side of his personality and show the world he is more than a crummy slogan in white trunks.
6. Damien Sandow
5 of 9Poor Damien Sandow. This guy has taken three different gimmicks and turned them into gold, and WWE has dropped the ball every single time.
He has started using his Intellectual Savior character again, but only at live events. WWE has yet to have him use it on Raw or SmackDown.
If management is unwilling to push him using his old gimmick, then he should be allowed to just go out there and be himself.
He is a talented wrestler with above-average skills on the mic and enough charisma for two Superstars. The fact he has been used so poorly is a crime.
Perhaps WWE is just waiting for the right time to bring him back with a renewed push, but it seems more likely he will continue to flounder based on how he has been treated over the past year.
Even though he can speak for himself, it might benefit Sandow to pair up with a manager. What's Paul Heyman doing when he's not managing Lesnar? They would make a perfect fit.
5. And 4. Los Matadores
6 of 9Other than The Usos and The Dudley Boyz, Los Matadores have been together longer than any other tag team in WWE. They are cousins in real life too, so they have even more chemistry than most duos.
The whole bull-fighter gimmick might have appealed to younger fans in the beginning, but nobody who has reached puberty will buy into it. It's time for a change.
Simply going back to being Epico and Primo might not be the answer, but there has to be something they can do. They have good mat skills and can fly with the greatest of ease, so there is no reason they shouldn't be in the hunt for the Tag Team Championships.
Letting them be themselves will work better if they have a manager, and it can't be a little person in a bull costume. Being bilingual gives them international appeal, but it shouldn't be the basis of their characters.
If they just lose the masks and mascot, get some new entrance music and stop doing their stupid "ole" chant after every third move, they will be much more valuable.
3. Alberto Del Rio
7 of 9It might be surprising to see the current United States champion on the list, but we have to face facts. This whole MexAmerican thing isn't working out.
He tried being an aristocrat with fancy cars. He tried to be a boring babyface. He tried to be a regular heel. While he has had great success in terms of titles, he has never really been all that popular.
What he needs is a whole new persona. It's hard to take someone who is established and change everything about them, but it's been done before.
The best option for Del Rio is to embrace his original Dos Caras Jr. character from Mexico. If WWE doesn't have the rights to the gimmick, he could just tweak his name a little.
The mask was an important part of his character in AAA and CMLL. It's also a big part of lucha libre culture in general, so it would help him reconnect with his Mexican roots.
It would also give WWE another piece of merchandise to sell, and that is always a good thing for a company that's willing to slap a logo on just about anything.
2. Curtis Axel
8 of 9If anyone should have succeeded in WWE based on skill and pedigree, it was Curtis Axel. He is the son of Mr. Perfect and a gifted technical wrestler, but he has never quite connected with the crowd.
When WWE first introduced him as Michael McGillicutty, everyone made fun of his name, but we all knew he had the ability to work past it.
When he was repackaged and put with Paul Heyman, it seemed like he was destined for great things. He was given a victory over Triple H and the Intercontinental Championship within a month of his debut.
Then everything started to go downhill. When Heyman dropped him as a client was the first nail in his coffin. After he was put with Damien Sandow and turned into a Randy Savage caricature, all hope seemed lost.
His mic skills leave a lot to be desired, but the passion is there. If he starts going by his real name of Joe Hennig and focuses more on producing good matches than giving good promos, he could evolve into at least a solid midcard performer.
Perhaps a stint in NXT could revitalize his career. It worked wonders for Tyson Kidd, and it could work for Curtis Axel too.
1. Fandango
9 of 9Fandango has a ridiculous gimmick, but WWE obviously saw enough potential in him to give him a big debut victory at WrestleMania 29 against Chris Jericho.
Nowadays, it seems as if only the fans over in England appreciate the antics of this once-promising Superstar, and that's a shame because he has a lot to offer.
It's hard to believe he has been employed with WWE for almost 10 years. He toiled away in developmental for most of that time, so it only looks like he has only been around for a few years.
A ballroom-dancer gimmick was always going to have a shelf life, and Fandango's expired long ago. It's time for a drastic change. It doesn't matter what it is as long as he does something completely different.
He is another Superstar who may benefit from a manger or a tag team partner, but anything is better than sitting on the sidelines for 51 weeks a year.
What do you think? Can any of these people be saved with a change to their gimmicks? Who else do you think belongs on this list?
