Lee Haskins vs. Randy Caballero Title Fight Canceled: Latest Details, Reaction
Randy Caballero won't be defending the IBF Bantamweight Championship Saturday after he weighed in five-and-a-half pounds over the 118-pound weight limit Friday afternoon after coming in at 119 pounds Thursday.
As a result of Caballero's weigh-in, the IBF awarded Lee Haskins the bantamweight title, per Andrew L. John of the Desert Sun.
According to John, Golden Boy Promotions attempted to negotiate new terms on behalf of Caballero for a catchweight fight with Haskins, but Haskins' team declined to pursue that avenue.
"It's a shame, yes, that he didn't make weight," said Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya. "I don't know what the exact problem was, but we'll get to the bottom of it."
Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times provided additional insight:
BBC Points West's Alistair Durden thought the moment was bittersweet for Haskins:
At least Haskins is walking away from Las Vegas with the title, which is a more-than-positive result considering the 31-year-old opened as a 6-1 underdog against Caballero, according to Odds Shark.
Haskins now has a number of potential lucrative clashes he can zero in on for his next fight.
Meanwhile, Caballero's camp will likely attempt to determine what exactly caused his major weight gain in the span of a day. Once that's done, Golden Boy can begin looking at future opponents for the 25-year-old.
