The team has yet to announce a timetable for Smith's recovery, but the season-ending nature of the injury is concerning for a freshman who had impressed throughout the regular season.
The youngster arrived at USC as a 4-star recruit, per 247Sports, and lived up to the billing early despite the Trojans' many struggles.
After recording seven tackles in USC's season opener, Smith recorded double-digit tackles in three of his next five games. However, USC's 42-24 win over Utah was the freshman's coming-out party.
En route to the upset, Smith recorded three interceptions, including a 54-yard pick that he returned to the house.
"Cam Smith is so smart, and the dude is playing," USC wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster said, according to ESPN.com's Kyle Bonagura. "If you’re playing, you’re playing. He’s a freshman and he’s balling."
With fellow middle linebacker Lamar Dawson done for the season as well (shoulder surgery), junior Michael Hutchings should be next in line to try to plug the gaping void in USC's defense.
USC is on a four-game winning streak dating back to Oct. 24, but maintaining that momentum without the team's leader in the middle will be difficult against Oregon and UCLA as November draws to a close.
