Undertaker vs. John Cena Rumored WWE WrestleMania 32 Match Is Dream Showdown

Ryan DilbertNov 9, 2015

The magnitude of Undertaker vs. John Cena, a collision between two immortals of the wrestling ring, makes it the perfect choice to headline WWE WrestleMania 32.

It's rare that a dream match with legends this large is actually possible. Age, health, politics often stand in the way of the massive bouts fans dream up. Not here.

Undertaker has shown himself this year to be fully capable of one last showdown for the ages at The Showcase of the Immortals.  At WrestleMania 30, he looked broken down, a gunslinger limping off into the horizon. But against Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam and Hell in a Cell, he delivered a pair of redeeming performances, showing that many had written him off too soon.

Still, The Deadman's time in the ring is extremely limited.

WWE clearly sees the end coming. It has made an effort to highlight Undertaker more than usual this year, seemingly playing out a farewell tour for the megastar.

He wrestled at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view for the first time in five years, at SummerSlam for the first time since 2008. And the company is now billing Survivor Series as a celebration of The Phenom.

Now word of a potential WrestleMania match opposite Cena has emerged. According to PWInsider (h/t Wrestle Zone), WWE is discussing the idea of Undertaker and Cena clashing at WrestleMania 32, with creative plans currently headed in that very direction.

For a WrestleMania that needs gladiators with enough star power to fill the enormous coliseum that is AT&T Stadium, this matchup is a no-brainer. There isn't a realistic dream match WWE can turn to that equals this one.

Sting vs. Undertaker isn't happening. Sting didn't make it to the end of his match with Seth Rollins, suffering a scary neck injury near the end of the bout. He may be done for good.

Years' worth of a Steve Austin comeback have yet to lead anywhere. Shawn Michaels has looked dead-set on staying retired. The Rock could be back at some point, but with two big injuries in his last two matches, there's no guarantee that he doesn't just opt to remain a Hollywood A-lister instead.

Undertaker vs. Cena is right there, waiting to be booked, a meeting of two all-time greats on par with The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan

Both The Deadman and Cena are already members of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame (h/t Pro Wrestling Illustrated). When WWE.com put out the WWE version of Mt. Rushmore, both men's faces appeared in the fictional stone. One could easily argue that either wrestler is one of the top five performers in WWE history.

When the company compiled its WWE Top 50 Superstars of All Time DVD (h/t WrestlingDVDNetwork) in 2010, Undertaker was first on the list. Hogan told Busted Open Radio (h/t ProWrestling.net), "In my opinion, John Cena is the greatest WWE champion of all time."

And surprisingly WWE has barely tapped into the potential of these two stars going up against each other.

The two battled at Vengeance 2003. Undertaker attacked Cena while they were tag partners in 2009, seemingly setting up a big match between them that never came to fruition. They have been on the opposite side of a handful of tag matches, but that's about it.

Things have changed dramatically since that 2003 meeting too.

Cena was not the star he is today at that point. He was still a newcomer, still a rapping heel with more potential than proven moments.

He's since been WWE's centerpiece collecting world championship at a historic rate.

Undertaker's legend has grown since then, as well. After taking down Cena in '03, Undertaker went on to string together nine more WrestleMania wins in a row, including a pair of masterpieces each against Triple H and Michaels.

Bray Wyatt retiring Undertaker would be a hugely powerful moment, a star-creating act. Having Undertaker face and put over someone on the rise makes sense in a lot of ways too. But none of those potential matches is on the level of Cena vs. Taker.

And should Undertaker's last match come against Cena, there would be a certain poetic symmetry to it. After all, it was The Deadman who congratulated Cena backstage after his successful debut over a decade ago.

Cena was a fearful kid back then, giddy at the fact that Undertaker shook his hand. He has since become WWE's top star, a member of the squared circle pantheon.

With Austin not making a comeback, Sting's future unclear and Rollins and Randy Orton both likely hurt until after WrestleMania, WWE still has one major piece of ammo to cram inside its cannon.

Legend versus legend, cornerstone versus cornerstone—Undertaker vs. Cena has WrestleMania written all over it.
