Michigan State vs. Nebraska: Score, Highlights and Twitter Reaction

Danny WebsterNov 7, 2015

Controversy in college football lives again, and because of that, the Michigan State Spartans are no longer undefeated.

Tommy Armstrong Jr.'s 30-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Reilly with 17 seconds remaining lifted the Nebraska Cornhuskers to a shocking 39-38 victory over the Spartans on Saturday night in Lincoln, Nebraska.

But it wasn't that cut-and-dried.

The replay showed Reilly appeared to step out of bounds of his own accord and came back in to make the catch and walk into the end zone. However, the referees ruled Michigan State's Jermaine Edmondson pushed Reilly out. The line judge threw his hat after the score, indicating Reilly went out of bounds.

After further review, the call stood, and 4-6 Nebraska pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the college football season.

Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook threw for 335 yards and four touchdowns, but Armstrong delivered when needed. He threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner.

Unlike the crazy Miami-Duke game last week, this result had College Football Playoff implications for 8-1 Michigan State. As for Nebraska, this was a huge win for a struggling program under first-year head coach Mike Riley as his team builds for the future.

For the second straight week, college football officiating has been brought into question, and there will surely be a statement made Sunday.

Postgame Reaction

Ralph D. Russo from the Associated Press called it karma:

Of course, Michigan State had some luck of its own on an improbable blocked-punt game-winning touchdown versus Michigan on Oct. 17.

Interestingly, Lost Lettermen provided this view of a possible offensive interference:

ESPN's Darren Rovell added, "If Michigan State runs the table, beats Ohio State and wins Big Ten title game, that bad call cost conference $6 million."

Still, Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio took the high road in his postgame presser, per Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal:

There was also this nugget from ESPN.com's Mitch Sherman:

Dantonio had every right to be critical of the officiating, but he also understood his Spartans had a 31-20 lead going into the fourth quarter.

After a win like that, an emotional high is expected, and the Huskers grabbed this quote from Riley during his presser:

But as it turns out, not everyone stuck around for the ending. Reilly had this to say, per Samuel McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald:

For the second week in a row, a no-call will be brought into question. It doesn't mean the Miami-Duke crew is off the hook, but it will leave fans questioning another outcome of a big game.
