Peyton Manning Passes Brett Favre for Most Wins by a Quarterback in NFL History

Mike ChiariFeb 7, 2016

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning already surpassed former Green Bay Packers legend Brett Favre earlier this season to become the NFL's all-time leading passer. Manning leapfrogged Favre again Sunday during Denver's 24-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50.

Andrew Siciliano of the Red Zone Channel noted: "Manning is now the winningest QB in NFL history. 200 victories, one more than Brett Favre."

The future Hall of Famer has passed Favre in several key statistical categories (including career passing touchdowns as well), but it's likely none means more to Manning than wins.

At the same time, though, the 39-year-old veteran downplayed his pursuit of the wins record when asked about it leading up to Denver's game against the Pack during the 2015 season, per Ian McCue of 247Sports:

"

I don't really get into the what ifs and the hypotheticals...I got asked about [the wins record] by the Green Bay media, they were really searching for questions, asking about that, asking who has better insurance commercials, me or [Aaron] Rodgers. So they were getting pretty philosophical as well. So I try to kind of stick in the now and the current and we want to have a good week of practice and play well and try to get a win.

"

Winning has always been one of his greatest qualities, but it has come to the forefront in 2015, perhaps more than ever before. Even though Manning's production was down from what fans have grown accustomed to (nine touchdown passes and 17 interceptions in the regular season), the Broncos went on to win the sport's highest honor as Super Bowl champions.

There is no question Denver's dominant defense was a big reason why the team enjoyed so much success in 2015, but it isn't as if Manning hasn't made his fair share of plays despite his struggles.

Truth be told, he has carried teams on his back for much of his career, which is largely why he is now the winningest quarterback in NFL history.

He finally received some help in the form of an elite defense for arguably the first time in his career, and even though his statistical output was down significantly, he added a second ring to his legendary resume.

Manning may one day look back at this record as one of his greatest accomplishments, especially since it came on the NFL's biggest stage on Super Bowl Sunday.
