Jacoby Jones Released by Chargers: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction
The San Diego Chargers released wide receiver Jacoby Jones on Tuesday, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Jones, who signed a two-year, $5.5 million deal in March, per Gehlken, was brought in for his special teams prowess in San Diego. Unfortunately for him, though, he had little success. Appearing in just five games this season, Jones had five punt returns for minus-four yards.
The Chargers as a team have just one punt-return yard this whole season and are on pace to set the NFL record for fewest return yards. Per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, the 1965 St. Louis Cardinals hold the league record with just 27.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Considering Jones hasn't hauled in a reception all season—a big reason why the Chargers special teams are struggling mightily—didn't do him any favors in San Diego either. The writing seemed to be on the wall for the 31-year-old the day before his release, per Gehlken:
Because San Diego didn't cut him before 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Jones will have to go through waivers, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. Any team that would want to pick him up would have to pay his base pay of $476,470.
If he clears waivers, then Jones will become a free agent.
Teams who are desperate for wide receivers might take a look at Jones in the next few days. As a third or fourth receiver, Jones has recorded 230 yards or more in each of the previous eight years. But if he wants to hang on in the league, he has to straighten out his special teams problems.
