Philip Rivers, Melvin Gordon, Malcom Floyd's Post-Week 8 Fantasy Advice

Alec NathanNov 1, 2015

Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers dropped Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens, 29-26, but the signal-caller and a couple of his offensive running mates posted encouraging fantasy numbers in the loss.

Below, we'll break down how Rivers, wide receiver Malcom Floyd and running back Melvin Gordon fared and what their fantasy prospects look like heading into Week 9.

Philip Rivers

Rivers is a top-tier fantasy quarterback, plain and simple.

With Sunday's 301-yard display in hand, Rivers has now thrown for at least 300 yards in five straight games. During that stretch, he's also tossed 13 touchdowns. Additionally, Rivers has attempted at least 30 passes in every game with the exception of San Diego's Week 2 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals

As a bonus, Rivers didn't throw an interception for the second time in three weeks. In other words, he's a fantasy goldmine right now.

San Diego's running game has largely been ineffective, so look for Rivers to continue airing the ball out at outrageous clips in the weeks ahead.

Malcom Floyd

Floyd has been boom-or-bust all season, but he boomed in a big way Sunday afternoon.

Keenan Allen exited with muscle spasms in the second quarter, per the team's official Twitter account, and Floyd immediately took over as Rivers' primary receiving option.

The two hooked up for a 70-yard touchdown bomb that accounted for more than 75 percent of Floyd's receiving production on the day, but the big strike pointed to the 34-year-old's ability to stretch the field, per the NFL on Twitter:

Floyd is certainly worth rostering, but his value will be directly tied to Allen's health. If the Chargers' No. 1 receiver returns next week against the Chicago Bears, Floyd won't be anything more than a risky flex play.

Melvin Gordon

Gordon's rookie slog continued against the Ravens.

While the 2015 first-round pick didn't appear particularly explosive in Weeks 6 or 7, he was able to eclipse four yards per carry against the Green Bay Packers and Oakland Raiders

Sunday, his production tailed off. Gordon managed a long run of just six yards while mustering three yards per carry, and he wasn't viable as a receiver despite recording five catches.

Through eight games, Gordon still hasn't tallied a touchdown or a 100-yard game on the ground. Owners may be enticed to roll with Gordon against a shaky Bears run defense next week, but it's hard to trust him based on the sample size we've been exposed to.
