Atlanta Hawks vs. New York Knicks: Live Score and Highlights

Laureen IratOct 29, 2015

Thursday's home opener was intended to mark the beginning of a new era at Madison Square Garden as the New York Knicks hosted the Atlanta Hawks. However, the Hawks' fantastic defense kept the Knicks' offensive efforts at bay, allowing them to walk away with a 112-101 victory.

The Knicks were off to a strong start following a 122-97 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night and were looking to keep the momentum going. Carmelo Anthony had a better offensive performance tonight, leading all scorers with 25 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Robin Lopez also logged in 18 points and four rebounds. Kyle O'Quinn ended with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Rookie Kristaps Porzingis continued to impress tonight with his blossoming grit and aggressiveness. He had the crowd and the bench on their feet with a pretty spin move in transition, finishing it off with a one-handed slam. At the end of the night, he logged 10 points and eight rebounds in the second game of his NBA career.

It's only the first loss of the season, so there is no need to worry. After finishing last season with a depressing 17-65, Derek Fisher and his newly assembled roster are looking to turn over a new leaf and get back into serious basketball conversation and eventually playoff contention.

The Atlanta Hawks, who finished in first place in the East with an impressive 60-22 record, are looking to keep their spot at the top and take things all the way to the Finals. Thursday marked the return to the Garden of Tim Hardaway Jr., who was traded to the Hawks during the 2015 draft in exchange for the pick that landed rookie guard Jerian Grant in NYC. The Hawks were without  Thabo Sefolosha (ankle) and Mike Muscala (ankle).

Thursday's game proved why the Hawks were number one in the East last season: defense. They were able to keep the Knicks' momentum at bay, holding them to 40.9 percent shooting and 20.7 percent from behind the arc, and 21 turnovers.

Adding to their was their consistent offense, with most oft their starters in double digits. Kyle Korver came through with his reliable perimeter shooting, racking up 15 points in 3-5 behind the arc. Jeff Teague finished the night with 23 points, four rebounds, and eight assists. Al Horford ended the night with 21 points and nine rebounds.

So far, NBA opening week has served as a litmus test for both teams, who now hold a 1-1 record this season. As the season progresses, Melo will find his footing offensively, while the younger pieces around him get better with the small details and continue to build their confidence.

The Atlanta Hawks will host the New Orleans Pelicans in Atlanta on Friday, October 30 at 8:00 ET.

The Knicks will visit the Washington Wizards on Saturday, October 31 at 7:00 ET.
