Colin Kaepernick, Torrey Smith Comment on QB's Relationship with 49ers Teammates

Timothy RappOct 28, 2015

Colin Kaepernick and Torrey Smith responded Wednesday to a report from Jay Glazer of Fox Sports that said the San Francisco 49ers quarterback had lost his confidence and was "on an island in that locker room."

When asked if he was isolated from his teammates or if he was the scapegoat for the team's 2-5 start, he answered, "I really hope not," per Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group.

"For me, I give everything I can to this organization, I give everything I can to my teammates to try and help us win, to try and help us moving forward," he continued before adding, "I have a great relationship with my teammates. That’s a situation I don’t understand the agenda who’s saying that or what the source is.”

Smith agreed.

“We’re losing. It’s tough. It’s frustrating," the wideout told Inman. "But it’s not dividing the team at all. It’s not separating Kap. Kap isn’t on a damn island, or whatever someone says. We’re here together, trying to win together.”

Kaepernick has had his struggles this season, throwing for 1,453 yards, six touchdowns, five interceptions and completing just 61.4 percent of his passes. The Niners are currently last in the NFL in yards (295.6) and points per game (14.7), which is a big reason why they've lost five of six games after opening the season with a 20-3 win over the Minnesota Vikings

The Niners as an organization will have to decide if Kaepernick is the player they want leading their offense—both on and off the field—going forward.

It seemed they did just that last summer, inking him to a huge contract extension (six years, $114 million), but if his struggles continue on the field and the whispers suggesting he isn't a great teammate persist off it, the team may decide it's time to move on.
