Liverpool vs. Bournemouth: Winners and Losers from Capital One Cup
Jurgen Klopp claimed his first Liverpool victory as the Reds defeated Bournemouth 1-0 on Wednesday night in a Capital One Cup fourth-round match at Anfield.
Nathaniel Clyne scored the game's only goal in the 17th minute, steering in from a tight angle after Bournemouth cleared Joao Teixeira's audacious shot off the line.
The win sent Liverpool into the final eight of the Capital One Cup, where the Reds will face Southampton.
Here, Bleacher Report selects winners and losers from the match.
Winner: Jurgen Klopp
1 of 6
Since the arrival of manager Jurgen Klopp as Brendan Rodgers' successor, Liverpool had played three and drawn three. So while Wednesday's win sent the Reds into the last eight of the Capital One Cup, it also represented Klopp's first victory in charge.
The home supporters at Anfield will be hoping it was just the first of many. During his time in his native Germany, Klopp famously led Borussia Dortmund to a pair of Bundesliga titles and the UEFA Champions League final.
Liverpool have much work to do if they are to match that record, but every major journey, as the saying goes, starts with a single step.
Winner: Roberto Firmino
2 of 6
The star of the night, without doubt, was Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian played a role in creating the opener (though he didn't receive an assist) and served as the side's main attacking catalyst amid a strong overall performance.
Signed in the summer for £29 million from Hoffenheim, Firmino has yet to live up to his massive price tag. One game won't change that, but this was a fine start. The 24-year-old displayed excellent vision to pick out Joao Teixeira for a golden chance in the 17th minute, and although Teixeira saw his shot cleared off the line, Nathanial Clyne converted a moment later with a cool finish.
"Wonderful display from Roberto Firmino tonight. Man of the match," tweeted B/R contributor Jack Lusby. "Going to be a huge player for #LFC this season."
Winner: Nathaniel Clyne
3 of 6
Nathaniel Clyne scored the game's only goal in the 17th minute, finishing from a tight angle on the left after Bournemouth managed to clear Joao Teixeira's cheeky back-heel off the line.
The 24-year-old took his chance very well, showing composure in a tough spot inside the box. In addition, he deserves credit for following up on the play, refusing to stand and watch as his teammates attacked.
It was not a bad way to open his scoring account at Liverpool.
Winner: Adam Bogdan
4 of 6
Adam Bogdan seemed to wage a one-man war against Junior Stanislas in the first half, repeatedly denying the Bournemouth attacker with a string of excellent saves.
In the opening moments, Bogdan denied Stanislas one-on-one as the Cherries looked to capitalize on a fast start. Stanislas came close again with a 19th-minute header, only to see Bogdan save again.
The Liverpool goalkeeper then made another smart stop at his near post to keep out Stanislas' free kick six minutes before halftime.
On this evidence, Jurgen Klopp might have something to think about with his goalkeepers. Simon Mignolet is the No. 1, but Bogdan appears an able deputy—at least.
Loser: Bournemouth's Cutting Edge
5 of 6
Bournemouth started the match brightly and could have taken the lead on multiple occasions before Nathaniel Clyne's opener. As they have so often this season, the Cherries thrilled their supporters with attractive football but lacked a cutting edge in the final third.
Through 10 matches in the Premier League, Eddie Howe's men are hovering precariously above the relegation places. If they want to steer clear of trouble, Bournemouth must find a way to convert their good football into goals more regularly.
"Some of our passing and build-up play was very good—the only thing missing was the goals," Howe told BBC Sport. "We grew into the game; even in the second half when we didn't create chances, we played well. We don't want to get used to losing, but it was a positive day for us."
Winners: Liverpool's Youngsters
6 of 6
In a match like this one, when the manager makes several changes to his starting 11, one of the objectives is to see how young players will take their chance. In this case, Liverpool's youngsters did so very well.
Three players—Connor Randall (20), Cameron Brannagan (19) and Joao Teixeira (22)—made their first senior starts at Anfield, and all three fared well. Teixeira in particular caught the eye with a flashy display that included a cheeky back-heel shot that nearly went in. The sequence did lead to goal, with Nathaniel Clyne firing home after Bournemouth had cleared Teixeira's shot off the line.
"We had many chances against a side which played with nearly their first team. We were dominant, played football and got the win we deserved," manager Jurgen Klopp said, per BBC Sport. "It was very important to win because we decided to go with a new team. To win is always good for the feeling of the whole team."
