Fantasy Football Rankings: Week 8 Big Board
You should have a pretty good idea of where teams stand after seven weeks, but it’s important to take a deeper look at what each team is producing and giving up on a weekly basis by examining multiple facets of the numbers.
Narrowing the sample size down to the last four weeks can give you a better snapshot of how a team or a player is trending heading into this week’s action, although it’s also important to weigh the competition along the way.
For instance, the New York Giants have been a top-five defense against fantasy quarterbacks over the last month, but an examination of their game logs shows they’ve faced Matt Cassel, Sam Bradford, Colin Kaepernick and Tyrod Taylor in those games. None of those players ranks among the top 15 fantasy quarterbacks on the season, so is the Giants' performance really that impressive? Probably not, and they could be exposed by Drew Brees this weekend.
Statistics can reveal trends, but it’s important to have the context behind those numbers to tell the whole story. It’s another way to help you make the best possible decisions when setting your lineups, and every advantage helps, especially in these critical weeks before the fantasy playoffs get underway.
Without any further ado, it’s time to check out my first look at the rankings for all of the positions heading into Week 8.
As always, these rankings will be updated throughout the week and right after inactives come down for the early-afternoon games Sunday.

Quarterbacks: Thursday Night Tom
2 of 7
Better than usual
- Cam Newton, Car: After struggling against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7, Newton has an excellent chance to bounce back at home against the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts have been in a tailspin for weeks and have allowed the ninth-most fantasy points to QBs over the last four weeks. This has the makings of a big performance from Newton.
- Matthew Stafford, Det: Trusting Stafford is never easy because he lacks consistency, but the hope is that some coaching changes will help rejuvenate the Detroit Lions offense starting this week with a trip to London, England, to face the Kansas City Chiefs. They’ve shown improvement against QBs in their last four games but haven’t faced the stiffest competition. Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones had just 209 yards but was able to get wide receivers Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant involved. Look for Stafford to do the same with Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate against the Chiefs.
- Others: Drew Brees, NO
Worse than usual
- Aaron Rodgers, GB: Rodgers comes off the bye with a brutal matchup in Denver to face the Broncos. Over the last four weeks (three games), Denver has been the best defense against QBs, and that’s been the strength of the team. Obviously, Rodgers provides the Broncos with a tough matchup of their own. You’re not sitting Rodgers, but it’s not a bad idea to lower expectations just a bit because of the matchup.
- Andrew Luck, Ind: Banking on garbage-time production from Luck shouldn’t be the way we’re getting his fantasy points, but that’s exactly what happened in a beatable matchup with the New Orleans Saints in Week 7. Garbage time may be the only way Luck gets any production when the Colts head to Carolina to face the Panthers this week. Carolina has given up the second-fewest fantasy points per game to QBs, so it may be a rough weekend for Luck and Co.
Avoid
- Peyton Manning, Den: Manning isn’t even putting up good numbers for a backup fantasy quarterback, so there’s no way you can consider using him against the Green Bay Packers in Week 8. The Packers come into this week giving up the fifth-fewest fantasy points per game to QBs.
Sleepers
- Teddy Bridgewater, Min: If you’re streaming QBs, might I suggest taking a look at Bridgewater this week? He’s facing a Chicago Bears defense that’s in the bottom four in terms of points allowed to QBs, and Bridgewater has seen an uptick in his passing numbers since the emergence of wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

Running Backs: The Raven Effect
3 of 7
Better than usual
- Chris Johnson, Ari: Amazingly, Johnson is second in the NFL in rushing, and if you say you expected this to happen following a poor finish to his time with the Tennessee Titans and a forgettable performance with the New York Jets in 2014, you’re lying. Even Johnson told NFL Network’s James Palmer, "I honestly thought my career was over," per NFL.com's Chris Wesseling. Instead, he’ll have a chance to continue his comeback season against the Cleveland Browns this weekend. They’ve allowed 562 rushing yards, three TDs and the third-most fantasy points to running backs in the last four weeks.
- Charcandrick West, KC: Week 7 saw West bounce back from his disappointing first chance to start for Jamaal Charles in Week 6 by rushing for 110 yards and a touchdown in a win over the Steelers. He can follow that up against the Lions, as they’ve allowed the ninth-most fantasy points to running backs in the last four games. West is the top option in Kansas City’s backfield.
- Others: Marshawn Lynch, Sea; Justin Forsett, Bal
Worse than usual
- Latavius Murray, Oak: I have no problem being the wet blanket of reality when it comes to Murray. Coming off the bye, he rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown in a beatable matchup against the San Diego Chargers in Week 7. Week 8 gets tougher when the Jets come to Oakland. They’ve been the best run defense in the league, with just 60 yards allowed over their last three games. Don’t expect Murray to overachieve in such a tough matchup.
- Darren McFadden, Dal: Last week, the Dallas Cowboys had to turn to McFadden following an oblique injury suffered by starter Joseph Randle. With 152 rushing yards and a touchdown, McFadden took the lead in what’s been a tough backfield to get a handle on in the last month. If McFadden leads the way this week, expectations should be down, as he’ll be facing a Seattle Seahawks defense that’s given up the fourth-fewest fantasy points and just 289 yards rushing to running backs in the last four weeks.
- Others: Ronnie Hillman, Den
Avoid
- Carlos Hyde, SF: The excitement from Hyde’s Week 1 performance is a distant memory, so much so that some have asked me if Hyde is droppable, which is a legitimate question nearly halfway through the season. Game flow and being on a terrible team have killed Hyde’s chance of consistent touches in his second season. Hyde will have a tough time getting anything going against a St. Louis Rams defense that’s allowed just 204 rushing yards in the last four weeks.
Sleepers
- Antonio Andrews, Ten: The Houston Texans are an absolute mess right now, and while a lot of attention is going to their bad quarterback situation, you can’t overlook how bad their defense has been. That’s why Andrews is a sneaky play this weekend. They’ve given up the most fantasy points to RBs in the last four weeks. Bishop Sankey looks like the odd man out for the Titans, so Andrews doesn’t have major competition for carries.
- Orleans Darkwa, NYG: Many have learned who Darkwa is for the first time this week. In Week 7, he played just 14 snaps but managed to finish with 48 yards and a touchdown. That should earn him more snaps this week in a great matchup with the Saints. They’ve allowed 481 rushing yards and four touchdowns to running backs in the last four weeks, which puts them seventh in fantasy points allowed during that span. This would be a nice spot for Darkwa to prove his worth in a bigger role.

Wide Receivers: London Calling
4 of 7
Better than usual
- Brandin Cooks, NO: While Cooks has been a disappointment this season, we saw some positive signs in last week’s win over the Colts. Cooks had a season-high 13 targets and wound up with six receptions for 81 yards. He should have a chance to build on that against an average and beatable Giants defense this weekend. They’ve given up 47 receptions, 646 yards and three touchdowns to wide receivers in the last four weeks. Cooks should be busy once again.
- Calvin Johnson/Golden Tate, Det: The Lions looked like their offense had come back to life during a Week 6 overtime win over the Bears, but they stalled in Week 7, and Johnson and Tate combined for just seven receptions, 100 yards and a touchdown on 13 targets against the Minnesota Vikings. I expect them to step up against the Chiefs this Sunday in London. The Chiefs have allowed the 11th-most fantasy points to wide receivers in the last four weeks.
Worse than usual
- T.Y. Hilton/Donte Moncrief, Ind: You needed garbage time to get the most out of Hilton and Moncrief in last week’s loss to the New Orleans Saints, which was a red flag in itself, but the concern continues with a much tougher matchup in Carolina against the Panthers in Week 8. They are the second-best defense against wide receivers in their last four games. Cornerback Josh Norman is playing as well as anyone in the league and could take whoever gets matched up on him totally out of the game. It’s tough to sit either one of these players, but expectations are down in a bad matchup.
Avoid
- Terrance Williams, Dal: Williams found the end zone last week, but he’s been mostly disappointing as the top wide receiver for the Cowboys without Dez Bryant, who may be back this week. With or without Dez, you don’t want anything to do with Williams, as he’ll be up against the Seahawks, the best defense against wide receivers over the last month.
Sleepers
- Marvin Jones, Cin: Jones was widely available on the waiver wire coming into Week 8, likely because the Cincinnati Bengals were on bye, but you can pick him up and plug him into your lineup for this Sunday’s showdown with Pittsburgh. The Steelers have been average against wide receivers, and Jones has been productive enough to be a solid WR3 in the last month. He’s worth a shot if you’re stuck this week.

Tight Ends: It's Clobbering Time
5 of 7
Better than usual
- Martellus Bennett, Chi: Bennett has at least 11 targets in his last three games and matches up with the Vikings this weekend following a bye for the Bears. Minnesota has allowed the second-most fantasy points to tight ends in the last four games. Other than Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots, Bennett might be the best fantasy tight end this week.
Worse than usual
- None of note.
Avoid
- Jordan Cameron, Mia: The Miami Dolphins got touchdowns from wide receivers Jarvis Landry and Rishard Matthews and running back Lamar Miller in last week’s win over the Texans, but Cameron was the forgotten man with two receptions for 23 yards on two targets. That’s basically the story of his season so far, and it’s not likely to get better when he faces the Patriots on Thursday night. No team has been tougher against tight ends than the Pats. Cameron remains a fantasy ghost.
Sleepers
- Ben Watson, NO: Watson’s fantasy production has picked up in the last three weeks, and he nearly scored for the third straight game on a fake field goal in the Week 7 victory over the Colts. Watson has been significantly outsnapping Josh Hill every week and will attempt to continue his strong play against the Giants. In the last month, the Giants have allowed the ninth-most fantasy points and seven receptions a game to tight ends.

Defense/Special Teams: Storming the Cassel
6 of 7
Best options based on matchups
- Seattle Seahawks (at Dal): This is a pretty obvious one, as you have a top-10 fantasy defense (41 points in the last four weeks) taking on a Matt Cassel-led Cowboys offense, which has given up the second-most fantasy points to defenses in the last four weeks. Enjoy the feast if you have the Seahawks.
- Arizona Cardinals (at Cle): Arizona’s defense hasn't been lights-out and should be better for fantasy, but the Cardinals will have a chance to put it together this week when they face the Browns in Cleveland. The Browns are yielding the third-most fantasy points to defenses in the last four weeks and may turn to quarterback Johnny Manziel if Josh McCown is out with a shoulder injury.
- St. Louis Rams (vs. SF): Who doesn’t want a piece of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick at this point? Well, besides the 49ers themselves, but they can’t admit that publicly—at least not yet. The hole may get deeper for Kaepernick on Sunday when he faces the Rams. Not only are the 49ers tied for the 11th-most fantasy points allowed to defenses in the last four weeks, but the Rams have scored the second-most fantasy points over that span as well.
- Atlanta Falcons (vs. TB): One of the biggest but underrated parts of the Falcons’ rise back to prominence this season has been their play on defense, which has translated into the fifth-most fantasy points in the last four weeks. They face quarterback Jameis Winston and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week. While Winston avoided turning the ball over in Week 7, he has seven interceptions and four fumbles on the season.

Kickers: Opportunity Knocks
7 of 7
Best options widely available on the waiver wire
- Blair Walsh, Min: Walsh has been rolling as of late, hitting 10 of 11 field-goal attempts in the last three games, including five against the Lions in Week 7. He should get more chances in a favorable matchup against the Bears this weekend.
- Josh Lambo, SD: Lambo has made at least two field goals in each of his last four games, and the Chargers continue to pile up the garbage-time production. Hopefully, that won’t be needed with a nice matchup against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 8. A better performance out of the Chargers as a team should give Lambo more opportunities instead of watching from the sidelines when the offense goes for two trying to make up a large deficit, as it did on multiple occasions last week.
