Liverpool Transfer News: Jurgen Klopp Wants Marco Reus Link-Up, Top Rumours

Rob BlanchetteOct 20, 2015

New Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is keen to add German superstar Marco Reus to his squad at Anfield, as he attempts to transform the fortunes of the Merseyside giants.

Spanish website Fichajes.net (h/t Sky Sports) claim the player might be interested in a reunion with his former Borussia Dortmund boss, as Klopp looks towards his previous club for ideas.

Jamie Anderson of the Daily Star also cited the Fichajes rumour, adding Liverpool may attempt an audacious move for the winger in the January transfer window, with Barcelona, Real Madrid and the Premier League's top clubs all monitoring developments.

According to Anderson, Reus signed a new four-year deal with BVB in February, with his £20 million buy-out clause removed—significantly increasing his value to the Bundesliga club.

Dortmund suffered without Reus last year, who was sidelined through injury for much of the campaign. Klopp's side stuttered at the wrong end of the table—contributing to his Westfalenstadion exit.

However, the attacker has started the current campaign brightly, scoring three times in six Bundesliga starts for his team, per WhoScored.com.

Klopp has directly refuted he will be plundering his last club's playing squad, saying he has "no intention" of taking anyone from BVB after his move to the Premier League, telling Bild (h/t Kristian Walsh of the Liverpool Echo):

"

I have no intention whatsoever to lure Dortmund’s stars to Liverpool. I am not interested in how much money I will be allowed to spend in January.

It is only October and I don’t even know how many games there are left until the winter.

But we clearly have plenty of games left and we will be taking a look at our own players first.

Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke also believes his former coach is true to his word, telling Bild am Sonntag (h/t Walsh) he thinks the 48-year-old is a friend to BVB: "Jurgen would never do anything that would damage BVB’s interests. I am 100 per cent certain about that. He would never approach any players behind our back. We are simply too close for things like that to happen. We have been through too much together.”

However, Klopp may chase a former player who swapped his yellow shirt for the Bundesliga's biggest team, with Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski suggested as a target.

Fichajes (h/t Metro) believe the Liverpool boss is planning talks with the striker's agent Cezary Kucharsky in a bid to bring the prolific goalscorer to the north-west, which would represent one of the biggest transfer coups in the club's illustrious history.

The first step Klopp needs to take in order to sign players of the calibre of Lewandowski and Reus is to get Liverpool back in the Champions League. BVB are still an attraction in Germany, and they have a better chance of Champions League football in 2016-17 than Liverpool currently.

Klopp plucked Reus and Lewandowski from smaller teams, and he will have to follow the same mandate at Liverpool while the team looks to make the top four in England.

However, the Reds have the finances to pull off the biggest deals, with owners FSG supportive to former manager Brendan Rodgers. And with Klopp now in charge, this support will only increase, with the German's pulling power undoubted in Europe and beyond.
